It’s 2008. The housing market has collapsed. Michael Banks and his two children are about to be foreclosed. What is he to do? Fly a kite and summon Mary Poppins, of course! If all our problems could be solved by Emily Blunt, what a wonderful world it would be. For now, we can escape through the magic of this film. Blunt is excellent in the role. Give her the Oscar. The musical sequences are a joy to watch. The songs themselves aren’t as catchy as the ones in the original but they’re good nonetheless. Really, there’s nothing highly critical to say about the movie. It’s whimsical in the traditional Disney style. The foreclosure plot is told and resolved nonsensically but it fits the mood of the story and leaves the audience feeling great about life. It’s what you want from a holiday season blockbuster.

It's not even its release date yet. Besides, I'm probably not seeing this till next week at the earliest.

I had a lot of fun.
There's nothing here on the level of "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "Spoonful of Sugar," or "Let's Go Fly a Kite," but my inner vaudeville fan fell in love with "The Cover is Not the Book" and "Trip the Light Fantastic" has some eyecatching choreography.

Love it.
I'd also add it really was refreshing to see there's at least someone out there who knows how to do a musical. That fucking Beauty and the Beast movie last year was so bloody discouraging, with all the numbers performed with blank, dead-eyed looks and people stating the songs as if they were mere dialogue. If you're going to insert musical numbers into your film, go goddamn all out and make your performers as animated as possible. Thank god for Mary Poppins Returns.

Much like the original, Mary Poppins Returns is a celebration of whimsy and happiness, and it gets the job done in that respect. This is a movie driven more by music and feeling, but that's mostly okay. First things first, Emily Blunt absolutely crushes it in the title role. Her performance honors that of Julie Andrews without outright copying it, and Blunt leaves just enough room for herself to add her own touch. The rest of the cast, from Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer to Lin Manuel-Miranda, are also uniformly solid and bring equal amounts of charm to the film. Meryl Streep, however, feels absolutely wasted and her scene/song seems utterly pointless and only included because maybe she and Rob Marshall are very close friends. Speaking of pointless though...look, I understand that Mary Poppins isn't supposed to have an overly complex story or anything, but the way this film resolves its main conflict toward the end indeed begs the question, "So what was the point of these side adventures?" As for the songs, they're good and certainly work within the context of the film, but I'm not sure how many of them will prove to be all that memorable. That's not necessarily a knock against them, but none of them really stand out as the next Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious or Let's Go Fly A Kite. Again, Mary Poppins Returns is certainly a movie that works in what it sets out to do, just don't go in expecting a new classic or anything. It successfully captures the spirit of Mary Poppins a lot of the time and has charm to boot, though, which is the most we can ask of it.
