So when I say this is my biggest disappointment of 2018, please don't take that as this is a bad film. It's not, it's actually quite great in parts. I had just hoped to see the next big crime epic, and what I got was just a solid run of the mill thriller. This was next to CREED II and THE MULE on my list of most anticipated films of the year.
The good - Daniel Kaluuya is spot on at being a villain. While he was fine in SICARIO and GET OUT as sidekicks and heroes, it's here that he does career work. Viola Davis also does tremendous work, and she needs more roles like this. Steve McQueen directs this like a master, and his expert framing is on full display here (and also credit to his cinematographer, Sean Bobbitt.) When this movie is firing, it's unbeatable. WIDOWS problem is that it tries to tackle way too much for what the core story brings. I appreciate the themes it wants tackle, but it disjoints the movie so much that you forget just a scene ago you were watching one of the best crime movies in recent years.
Look, this is still worth your time, even if I was let down by it. My fiancé liked it a lot, and people I know who saw it loved it more than I did. It's no fault of the film's, but I wish it was the picture I envisioned in my head.
