Are you ready for Freddie Mercury is Gay: The Movie? There’s been vocal criticism of the movie. It has a 59% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Consensus seems to be on the lack of focus for the band’s musical legacy. A lot of what the movie presents is inaccurate and it also omits chunks of their history. As a fan of the band, it’s understandable why many people are disappointed. That said. This isn’t Queen: The Movie. This is Freddie Mercury is Gay: The Movie. Make no mistake. The movie could care less about Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. The spotlight is solely on Freddie Mercury as a gay icon. The story begins with Freddie, who was born and raised in Zanzibar, defying his heritage and assimilating into the United Kingdom. This is what white people call cultural appropriation. He then meets and falls in love with a woman. Now serving the majesty and a vagina, he becomes the lead singer of a college band and takes them on the road to success. Along the way, and through many gas station restrooms (seriously), he comes to terms with his identity and sexuality. It sounds silly but it actually works. The songs they chose represent defining moments in Freddie’s life. Bryan Singer, dislike him or hate him, knows how to represent the gay journey. Remember the “coming out scene” from X-Men 2? He does that here too and also tackles romantic confusions, social isolation, depravity, mortality and acceptance. It’s an aids story told through the eyes of a rock star. It’s not perfect... but it’s pretty darn good.

FREDDIE MERCURY IS GAY?!?!?! DID SOMEBODY LET HIM KNOW?!?!?! Wait till you see the ridiculous "love story" they gave him. In real life his last boyfriend was hairdresser Jim Hutton who was HIV positive and stuck with him throughout the AIDS years. But in the movie Jim Hutton is some random guy that worked in catering for one of his crazy gay parties and turned down his advances for sex. Then at the end of the movie, after Freddie had redeemed himself, he shows up at Jim Hutton's home and says "did you know how many Jim Hutton's there was in the phone book?" I don't know how the audience didn't burst out laughing. Like I said, as a Queen biopic, it's pretty terrible. But as Freddie Mercury is Gay: The Movie, it's charming enough to work.

It's PG-13, so adjust your expectations for that kind of stuff.

Is it a "good" movie? Debatable. Was I entertained, mainly because of the music? Yes. I had issues with how many liberties they took with the facts (especially in the second half,) but Malek is a plus, and everyone looks like a dead ringer for the band.

It’s less about the rating and more about the band’s image.

everyone looks like a dead ringer for the band. If there was an Oscar for casting, this movie would be the winner.

Pleasantly surprised. I dug it. It wasn't perfect and was rather cheesy but overall not a bad little rock biopic.

The cheesy parts were probably Dexter "Eddie the Eagle" Fletcher, which shall make Rocketman an interesting watch. Unless by cheesy you mean the super duper gay parts obviously directed by Bryan Singer.

Prefacing this by saying that my only knowledge of Queen is that they made some pretty awesome songs.
I liked it overall, but man, there are moments so strong in in this movie that it makes me wish I could love it. It's a by-the-numbers musical biopic the majority of the time, sometimes frustratingly so, and that's most obvious in the first half. The first half feels so rushed, as if the movie itself knows that its stronger material is in its second half, and thus it just keeps throwing significant events at you in a "this happened, then this happened, and then this!" fashion. So when the more relaxed, confident pace of the second half kicks in, it's almost a relief. The movie is at its best when it's focusing on Freddie Mercury and how his lifestyle affected his various personal relationships. Yes, of course, the songs are great, but c'mon, that was a given. But seriously, Rami Malek has his Oscar nomination -- maybe even a win -- in the bag. The dude just disappears in this role and commands this movie. Even if some of the material he's given is standard, he makes it sing. And, my God, the last 20 minutes of this film (which is entirely Queen's performance at Live Aid) is fantastic and some of the best final 20 minutes of any movie this year. Back to Malek in relation to this sequence, you can just see in his eyes the fact that he (Mercury) knew at the time that this was probably it for him, and it makes that sequence that much more emotionally powerful. To the point that when they start belting out "We Are The Champions", you're fighting off tears.* If only the rest of the movie was like that.
So, yeah, Bohemian Rhapsody is oftentimes formulaic, but at least it's well-executed, but when it hits its highs...man, does it soar.
* I'm aware that he didn't die till six years after Live Aid, but the moment still works in the context of the movie.
