The movie begins with J. Jonah Jameson, Jr. crashing his spacecraft on Earth. On board are the symbiote. A corporation scoop it up and begin human trails. It doesn’t go well and people are dying. Meanwhile, ex-reporter Eddie Brock is down on his luck. He’s unemployed and his fiancé dumped him. So when he’s contacted about what’s going on with the symbiote, he jumps at the chance to get the exclusive. He breaks into the facility, mayhem ensues and that’s how he joins forces with Venom. Yes. Venom is a separate character from Eddie Brock. The symbiote are trying to invade Earth so they could eat humans. The leader of the symbiote is a character named Riot and Eddie & Venom have to defeat him to rescue the planet. If you’re tasked with making a Venom movie that doesn’t feature Spider-Man, I guess you could do you worse. I didn’t dislike this movie. It’s okay. Tom Hardy is actually really good in the role. The silly New York accent isn’t as bad as the trailers made it seem. And Venom is actually a funny character. The interaction between Brock and Venom is what makes the movie work. Now, of course, I’ll probably be in the minority with that opinion, based on the harsh critical response the movie has gotten. But it’s possible those people made up their minds before watching the movie. Objectively, there’s really nothing wrong with the movie. It’s kinda stupid in parts... and it’s a hard PG-13 instead of an R-rating as intended... but that’s about it. The humor is good. The action is silly but good. If most people drop the bias they’ll end up liking it.

Does it have enough action to justify 3d?

I'm thankful they had screenings of A STAR IS BORN last night so I could catch this opening night.

Tom Brady will easily surpass the 70's show guy. But no way is this movie going to be any good.

This joke needs to end here. If by "joke" you mean Sony's spin-off attempts, then I agree. Until then...

It was enjoyable...to a point. I liked the first half more than the second, where it became a bit of endless scenes of a CGI blob crawling over other CGI blobs amidst a few inconsistencies and plot holes. I wasn't too crazy about the portrayals of Brock and Venom, because I feel Brock should be more of an irredeemable shitbag and Venom was portrayed a bit too heroic for my liking.
Hardy was really fun in this movie though. I'd see a sequel, but then again I saw Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance so you don't want to know how low I'd sink.

Forgettable. Not as bad as the reviews say but definitely not good. Venom is cool the fighting between symbiotes was solid. I'll probably watch it again if it's on just to not see it in 3d.
I dug the bad guys evil lair though.
Give it a 5.5/10. Pretty meh.

I saw this today. Not wanting to contribute to the box office of this thing, I bought a ticket to A Simple Favor and changed theaters. It was pretty much what I expected from the reports I've seen. It was far too short, the villain was hopelessly generic and tacked on. The big fight at the end was just a pair of blobs bouncing off each other. To make matters worse, there was no reason for the fight in the first place. Venom could have just hidden until the right moment, and then done exactly the same thing to bring about the same resolution. Whoever ordered it cut down to PG-13 needs to be beaten.
So much wasted potential...
I did enjoy the back & forth between Eddie and Venom. It was well executed.

Gotta make the obvious joke: it's a turd in the wind.
Okay, well, actually I didn't actively hate it, but it was still consistently not good.
This movie...is just a mess. The script feels like it was pulled from a time capsule dug up from the late 90's/early '00's and filmed without improving it in any way. Comic book movies have evolved so much, and Venom feels like it refuses to change to the times. The amount of wasted talent here is staggering. And the tone is wildly off-balance. Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed -- were they just blackmailed into making this movie? I'll give it this: Venom himself and one or two of the action scenes are entertaining, and the back and forth he has with Eddie is fun, but other than that, this feels like it graduated from the same class as other movies such as the theatrical cut of Daredevil and the 2005 Fantastic Four.

I don’t think your 10.50 is going to make or break anything. It was only $5, but it's the principal.

That et phone home line was something else. I can't imagine Hardy enjoyed that day of filming.
Reboot it with Topher in a few years. Get it right finally.

Holy Damn Venom made 80 Million at the box office this weekend.
Wether any of us liked it or not, a sequel is locked in at this point.
I have to say I hear a sequel could be salvaged with Tom Hardy as lead just need better director and script for the sequel.

I liked this. It was funny, and I loved the personality the Venom symbiote had. A cameo from Scream and, presumably, Lasher was cool, and this movie had a pretty good car chase scene. I could tell the movie had been cut down, and I'm hoping we get a Director's cut when the blu-ray hits with all the additional content.
The camera work was almost Jason Bourne levels of bad at times, and the action was decent, but held back, I felt. Yes, this was a generic-villain film, but Marvel seems pretty ok with that formula in its films, even if this wasn't part of the MCU. The humor, surprisingly, is what kept this from being a wash.
While I maintain my disappointment with them moving away from the tried and true origin story that involved Peter Parker, I think they could still manage to pull off a storyline where Eddie moves to New York, gets humiliated by Peter, and loses the symbiote to Peter as well for some time. I could easily see the new Spiderman riffing with Eddie as they fight someone together.
Looking forward to the sequel, the after credit scene was cool.
7/10
