Hey all, not sure if I mentioned it before but my wife has been expecting twins and they arrived this past Tuesday. It was touch and go for breathing struggles for one of them but luckily both boys are now stable and their developmental trajectory is looking good. They were born at 31 weeks, 2 boys. So we now have 5 boys and 1 girl. Yes, she's outnumbered but also the oldest. Lol

September 29 was the 25th anniversary of Baby One More Time. Before Britney Spears was dancing with kitchen knives, she was one of the hottest specimens around. Doomsday can attest to the success of this video among teenage boys. A true monumental moment.

The in laws are moving closer. And the discussion of the baptism has begun. I say discussion but I'll be brow beat into it.
I don't understand why the older generation or the religious people always think their need for dunking a baby under some water that they spoke latin nearby trumps my desire to ignore organized (and unorganized) religion entirely - why is it the dunking always wins?
I mean I'll prob go through with it (I was baptised for a similar reason - grandparents) - but why do they think their belief is greater than mine?
If we do this one I wanna cover all the bases, does Islam Judaism satanism scientology or Mormonism have a similar ridiculous tradition I can suggest as well?
Its the class and the asking of permission I really am having a hard time with.

If we do this one I wanna cover all the bases, does Islam Judaism satanism scientology or Mormonism have a similar ridiculous tradition I can suggest as well? Islam doesn't. Mormons do the same baptism ceremony as Christians. Church of satan pretty much makes up its rituals as they go (some offer "un-baptisms"). Scientology's baptism involves paying ridiculous amounts of money for rituals and classes. As for Judaism... well, if the kid's a boy...
Really though, this shouldn't be that much of a conflict. Being an atheist means knowing that this water isn't magic and that there's no reason not to do this except for symbolism and a small bit of time wasted. It's when this stuff comes up when the kid is old enough to actually be conscious of what's going on that the real things worth fighting over begin.

Obviously it's gonna happen whatever - but this response doesn't really take into account the push and pull of the in laws relationship. This child gives me much more power in that relationship (sounds gross just typing that but it's true - and we all know it) and if I kowtow at every turn it sets a precedent. Hemming and hawing is required at some point to make sure they understand that I also have a belief system and a vision for how I want my son raised.

Are your in-laws Catholic or are they another denomination? I ask because if they're a Protestant denomination this may be the last you hear of things for a while so if getting the kid baptized means expanding world peace in your family it might not be a lot of skin off your back. If they're Catholic though and actively interested in getting their grandkids on board then you might get the squeeze to send them to/pay for Catholic school in a few years, not to mention the other sacraments that will be coming down the pipe when they're a little older (confession, communion etc.). It's not a conversation you'll need to have immediately but it will come down the road.

The city has introduced a plastic bag ban and it's been complete chaos. They really shouldn't have implemented it on a bye week with the Steelers - it's all anyone over 40 can talk about.
Now the county is considering taking it up - hopefully the state is next.
This is all really old news in a lot of states and cities with more rational politicians.

We've been there for about a year now. Its really not a big deal. People just get used to taking reusable, or have paper for when they forget.
I don't remember people getting in a bug fuss about it too much.
