Ugh, I lost $400 in online poker. If I never play it again, then I really only lost $1 a day for the next 400 days, but in advance, which is not that bad. I spend 5x that much at Starbucks 2-3 times a week. So... if I quit going to Starbucks for exactly half a year, and I stop playing poker, then... I'll actually make a profit.

I made 80 dollars in the blackjack pool at Caesars. That was pretty cool. You just needed to be in a pool, Nilade.

Finding out there were multiple Bozo the Clowns nationwide was a formative early internet experience for me.

I've come to the sudden realization that I hate my job, and I don't want to do it anymore. I want...I need...to change careers, but I don't know what I want to do. All my passions have sorta withered away, and I don't have enough experience or skill at any of them to do any of them anymore anyway.
Its hard when you have a college degree, but you've been working blue-collar work for so long that you really can't get anything else. I'm 41 and I don't know what to do with my life anymore.

Do you have an idea of what you would want to do? Would you be able to take classes or get any certifications needed if necessary?

Thats the thing...I don't know what I want to do. I just don't want to do what I do now. I could probably go out and find another job tomorrow, but in the same field, that would have the same pitfalls as now.

Keep your head up. My father was in his mid fifties when he managed to transition from working as a security guard to working a low level but comfortable office job that worked perfectly for him. Not sure how much of a pay cut you could afford but my usual stock advice for breaking into more of a professional environment is to go through temp agencies like Robert Half and Pro Staff. Their assignments don't always work out and it can be kind of an unstable life, but it is a way to find yourself a place in industries and fields you wouldn't have otherwise considered and get experience in them. Granted that's advice I'm usually giving to people in their twenties so I'm not sure how well it works for people in other situations.

Drac's got a good point, I went through a temp agency in my mid-twenties and it got me into the insurance field where I climbed up the later super quick and did okay for myself for a few years.
But it also depends on how much of a pay cut you can take especially with a wife and kid. It's going to be tough to find a place where you won't have to start at the bottom of the ladder but if you can manage to make it it'll be worth it in the end. Are you still working retail? Or did you shift industries without me knowing?

I'm in maintenance. Its kinda where I was when I left Target. I shifted through a few departments when I was there. I was in charge of the store maintenance when I left there, and now I work for a public housing authority fixing and maintaining houses and apartments. We have to be on-call periodically, and now I've been transferred to another property with less staff, and more after-hours emergency issues. Not to mention its not a super safe place to be after dark, so we pretty much have to go out in pairs. So, I'm pretty much on call for 2 weeks, then off for one. Not much of a work life balance. Not to mention some other changes going on that have kinda impacted the work as well.

I'm only thinking of this because I have family who's into this line of work but have you considered going into property management? Maybe it's more lucrative in California than it is in Oklahoma but there's several different things you can do in real estate that will almost certainly cater to your skill set. My cousin started off as a handyman replacing tile and insulation and now he runs his own property management company. Not that that's something you have to imitate but if you're already doing something similar I would think it would be a more natural move into that field rather than stay under the public housing authority. It's also not a terrible chore to get your real estate license, it's not easy but certainly not impossible. I dunno, has that crossed your mind?

I haven't really considered that, beyond potentially moving up in the company I'm at now.

I haven't really considered that, beyond potentially moving up in the company I'm at now. If you have a few minutes check out property management companies in your area and see what they’re looking for. There’s always work, it’s recession-proof, there’s no good or bad time of year and it could open a lot of doors. I might be biased but that’s because I know people who work in all aspects of real estate and have done well for themselves.

How come everybody creams over bill and ted 3 and coming to America 2 but accuses another matrix sequel of being proof that Hollywood is "out of ideas"?

I wouldn't say it's an "out of ideas" thing, it's a "everything the Wachowskis did since the original Matrix have been progressively declining in quality" thing.

Because the two Matrix sequels we have are no good and the Wachowskis' various failures since kind of makes it look like they're going back to the well out of desperation.

It's not proof that Hollywood is out of ideas. It's just proof that Warner Brothers is out of ideas.
