Typically every year there's at least one movie that really blows me away and stands out as a DDay favorite. This year, I've seen some good movies that I've enjoyed but nothing that has made me go 'wow.' What's everyone else's favorite movie this year? Best thing I saw in 2016 was the OJ Simpson show.

There were probably 5 or 6 movies from last year that were better than the best movie of this year.

I for one think this has been a pretty great year for movies all told. This is going to be the first year in a while where I'm not going to have to struggle to put together a top ten list when all is said and done.

This year, I've seen some good movies that I've enjoyed but nothing that has made me go 'wow.' What's everyone else's favorite movie this year? I feel pretty much the same way about this year's crop of films thus far, but there's still a few like Manchester By The Sea, Hell or High Water and Silence that I still need to see. I'm also going to see Live By Night, but that film's reception thus far has been a little disheartening. Also, A Monster Calls looks manipulative as fuck. Right now, I have two movies in mind for my top spot this year as of this moment, either of which I'd be happy with, but there's not one clear-cut film that makes me go, "Yep, that's my #1!" As for The Nice Guys...I want to like it more than I do. Re-watching it on Blu Ray helped me pinpoint why I don't, though: about forty minutes in, there's a character death that ultimately feels kind of unnecessary, and for me, it throws the tone for the rest of the movie kind of into whack. Before that scene, I do love the movie, but after that, while I still like the movie, it becomes kind of tonally weird for me. Good film, just one that won't be anywhere near my Top Ten for 2016.

Well out here in the Canadian prairies we haven't been getting a lot of the "acclaimed" releases of late.

Limited releases are still gradually rolling out here, too. Next weekend, there's Live By Night and Silence. Although it'll be a lot easier to see these once Oscar nominations are announced.

Why do parents insist on watching stuff in SD when they have HD?

Just one? La La Land, so far. Still haven't seen Moonlight, Jackie, Lion, or Fences, though. Going to watch Toni Erdmann, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Fences this weekend.

Why do parents insist on watching stuff in SD when they have HD? Do they understand the difference? My parents used to do that too before the new cable box came in and started auto switching to the correct HD channels. Some people just can't bring themselves to memorize new channel numbers.

My parents are good about HD channels vs. SD ones, but can't tell the difference between Blu Ray quality vs. DVD quality.

My parents are good about HD channels vs. SD ones, but can't tell the difference between Blu Ray quality vs. DVD quality. DVD's look fine on my 1080p TV from 2010. It's the reason why I've been lazy about upgrading my collection. I buy all new movies on blu-ray but only buy old movies if the price is cheap/reasonable or it's a limited edition (a/k/a Disney). SD channels, on the other hand, look like shit. I think it has to do with the signal. In order to get a strong HD signal, they purposely tamper with the SD signal and it results in faded colors and poor contrast. I suspect this to be the reason because the HD for my local channels look better than the HD for cable channels. An episode of Seinfeld looks blu-ray quality on local TV but on TBS it's 1080i as opposed to 1080p.

My Minority Report DVD looks bad. Something must have happened to it. Wouldn't have figured degradation this early on, but it looks like it's playing at 360p, no matter the player I've tried it on.

What are considered the representative films of the mumblecore movement? Drinking Buddies and You're Next are the first two that come to mind. I think it's safe to say that practically any project that Joe Swanberg is attached to has some elements of mumblecore. He's the reason I'm even aware of the movement.

What are considered the representative films of the mumblecore movement? The Puffy Chair, Hannah Takes the Stairs, Tiny Furniture, and Your Sister's Sister Please note however that this is not a movement worth exploring. Most of them are inane efforts made by hipsters with limited formal skills and nothing of importance to say.

Anyone have suggestions on which is the best tablet to buy? I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, works great for me. Woot.com normally has tablets up for a good price. Thanks sabin, i did get a galaxy tab today but think its same one of yours. I got the Galaxy Tab E version.
