With the way Amell had a panic attack just talking about working on Arrow and now this, the production of these CW shows sounds absolute shithouse. I hear Kevin Smith absolutely glow about working on these shows, but in one of his podcasts he's also admitted that the crew has told them that he's the only director that makes everyone happy, so who knows how miserable it is when he isn't there. I suspect there's no shortage of TV directors who resent the fact that they aren't movie directors, and are only in that job because they can't get anything else. Kevin Smith directs these CW shows because it's something he genuinely enjoys doing. He loves the characters, and he's a very easy going person who wants to get along with everyone around him. I suspect this is a highly uncommon combination of traits for most of the directors who work the DC/CW shows. The directors are the same ones who did Smallville 20 years ago. It’s the producers at fault. There’s a reason Smallville was “No Suit. No Flight.” There’s a reason Lois & Clark in the 90’s was a romantic-comedy focusing on the characters as newspaper reporters. It’s cheaper and quicker. The CW shows wanna be TV’s MCU and the cast & crew are paying the price. Just look at the crossover from December for example. That was what, 5 episodes? 5 hours of television. That they put together, in what, a month? It took Marvel 2 years to make the 3-hour Avengers Endgame. CW does a 5-hour Crisis on Infinite Earths in a month or two. You can see where the grueling 18-20 workdays are coming from. You can see where actors & stunt people are getting unnecessarily injured. |

I imagine they went union under Disney, whether or not they switched back when it was sold back to Saban, I'm not sure. One thing I do know is that those first ten seasons were brutal. |

If I had to work 20 hrs for a Z-tier network like CW, I'd quit too. The thing is these shows pay really well and get their cast international exposure. CW may be a Z-tier network, but their shows are picked up in almost every TV market on Earth. They also get the magic number of one hundred episodes to qualify for syndication. That's why their shows have such a high budget, despite the relatively low ratings. Between the big paychecks for the original episodes and the residuals from DVD, streaming and syndication, an actor who sticks it out for a complete run is set for life. |
