I peered into the vastness and saw nothing. Felt nothing.

Dear God, no! Not a dark and gritty reboot!
I remember watching reruns of the original Ultraman during the Summer as a kid, since it aired in the middle of the day. Great fun for any fan of 60's and 70's Kaiju movies. It was incredibly cheesy, but so what.

It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.

Am I crazy for remembering a US show in the 90s or 2000s that was a blatant ripoff of this design? VIPER? Or was it another one?

Wut.
I love Ultraman as much as the next toku fan, but...I guess I'll wait and see on this one.

Much like Power Rangers, Ultraman had a number of sequel series with variations on the character over the decades. To date, there are more than thirty different Ultra series in the franchise. You may have seen one of the many sequel series of Ultraman. According to Wikipedia, there's a brand-new series in Japan scheduled to begin tomorrow called Ultraman R/B. The Netflix series would seem to be an Americanized version, much like how both Toho and WB are making Godzilla movies.

To be honest, I think an American live-action Ultraman film could be fun in this superhero landscape we have today. It probably wouldn't be too different than Pacific Rim, but it probably would be some solid potential in seeing a giant armored superdude wrestling monsters in a city.
This reminds me though, I need to pick up Shout's Ultra Q and UltraSeven sets. But I'm already way behind on their Super Sentai releases. I'm only up to Ohranger because of how pricey they are. Guh.

Every once in a while Shout Factory's channel on Twitch shows one of these series. They ran a marathon of Ultraman Leo a couple of months ago.

That pilot evolved into VR Troopers.

Apparently, the trailer was released a month ago. I didn't come across it until today. It doesn't look as though this version of Ultraman is the size of a kaiju, or even fights with kaiju. What's the point?
