I want this to be good, but then I look at the screenwriter and I'm like nope, it'll suck.
How the fuck does Akiva Goldsman get work?

On the plus side Mike Flanagan is directing.

On the plus side Mike Flanagan is directing. Right, which is definitely good, and he's already proven he can successfully handle Stephen King material. Goldsman is just such a shit writer. Who knows, maybe the two will balance each other out and McGregor is what makes it good?

They debuted footage of this at CinemaCon. None of it is online yet for our viewing.
I'm going to be apprehensively optimistic about the project because, as I attested to last year in this thread, I like Flannigan and McGregor a lot.
Akiva Goldsman though is awful and somehow even ruins adaptations. The guy wrote The DaVinci Code and Batman & Robin so that should give everyone cause for concern.

Bought the book a while back, but I've been waiting till closer to the movie's release date to start reading. At this point, I trust in Mike Flanagan, but I thought he also adapted the screenplay. Am I wrong?

Am I wrong? This is probably why I should check IMDB before I post. You are correct, looks like Goldsman is out! Now I have real faith in this project. Might have optioned his screenplay initially but read it, realized he's a horrible writer, and Flanagan stepped in to revamp the script. Optimism no longer apprehensive.

Clearly, Goldsman has dirt on enough people for him to keep getting writing gigs.

Flanagan has chops. He seems like his career could go somewhere.

Flanagan has chops. He seems like his career could go somewhere. I like Flanagan and I’m betting the movie will be fine, but the marketing is doing a major disservice to it. Flanagan ain’t Kubrick and this won’t be The Shining. Think 2010 and 2001.

I liked the trailer. I'm definitely interested in the movie and think it has enough unique flavor to stand on its own and not just be a Shining rehash. This has potential to wade into silly territory, but I have faith in Flanagan to get the tone right.

Nothing is sacred anymore. It’s adapted from a book that Stephen King himself wrote. So.......... ??

I know, but still. I want the movie version of The Shining to be left alone.

It definitely looks a bit silly in regards to the "bad guys" and we know Stephen King can concoct ridiculous mythos at times, but I'm still interested. The stuff at the Overlook at the least looks like it'll be a fun return.
