I had a little bit to drink and stayed up longer than I should have. But in the mess of all that my friend suggested something that blew my mind!
Did one become more social justice poltical and the other Space Opera?
I personally like my Stars Wars to stay Space Opera and Scifi.
If I wanted political I watched "Star Trek" but what's really strange is. The New Star Trek movies are more space opera scifi and doesn't deal with any philosophical and polticial stuff, and Star Wars has become political....
Both franchises forgot what they were are.
The original Star Wars movies always had big space battles, and fantasy elements.
I grew up watching a lot of star trek. They dealt with racism, sexism, politics, gender swapping ect... You name it Star Trek has done it.
That's why I always thought of Star Trek as political/social justice scifi.
Anyways does anyone else notice this? Or completely disagree?

To say 'social justice' is dicey because it's such a hot-button term nowadays. The only thing I've heard of that Star Wars is doing that could be interpreted as social justice-y is putting an emphasis on the diversity of the actors which I don't think many people are really complaining about.

Most of the "political" stuff in the new Star Wars is either in the casting or in some relatively veiled subtext. Early Star Trek was way more overt in its philosophizing. Also Star Trek was an episodic TV show, which by its nature is going to have episodes which "tackle issues" and the movie versions always skewed more towards space opera.

Okay maybe social justice is a bad word.
But they make it pretty clear, even without the backstory, that the events that unfold in the original series are a result of rampant fascism in the Empire. The original Star Wars movies had political undertones and overtones of the entire series.
The new movies go out of there way to make it in your face how it relates to the real world issues today.

In time the eventual reboot of Spaceballs will surpass both.

Yeah, I dont really see how Star Wars has become politically driven.
