Upgrade (2018) - Review Thread
Upgrade has some very solid B-movie schlock. It has a fun premise with a cool world, incredible fight scenes with creative direction, a decent story, and a lot of dark, dry comedy. Leigh Whannell is really coming into his own as a director.
Sorry, Tom Hardy. Looks like someone just made the best possible Venom movie. (even the actor looks and acts like Tom Hardy.)
Seriously, this movie is way better than it has any right to be. That scene with the kitchen knife caused half my theatre to scream. Definitely was not expecting it to be that brutal.
I didn't see any trailers or anything for this, except my friend really wanted go see it. Total blast from beginning to end.
8.5/10

I found Upgrade to be a fun ride. Once we get the introduction to the world and characters out of the way, the pace is fast and action packed. The camera work is excellent, and writer/director Leigh Whannell gets the most out of her mostly unknown cast. Not-Tom Hardy once again does a great job.
I'm a big fan of movies done on a low budget without looking or feeling cheap, and Upgrade certainly fits the bill. Sadly, Upgrade is being released in less than 1,500 theaters and at a time of year where it's bound to be lost in the Summer Blockbuster shuffle. The film deserves better than this, and I don't understand why this release date was chosen.

It was okay. I liked it enough. They def squeezed the most out of the budget.

Fun movie, would have liked there to be more action since it effectively boiled down to 4 fights. I also was not a fan of the ending, but that's going to be a matter of preference to the moviegoer.
7/10.

That movie was fucking wild. Wow. You found Upgrade playing somewhere more than a month after it's release? Considering how badly the distribution for Upgrade appears to have been botched, that's surprising.

Seriously impressed by this, especially on its $3m budget.
It looked lush visually and the soundtrack stood out too, some so-so performances outside of LMG but they had to cut corners somewhere...
I'd be all over a sequel but not sure how they'd go about it. With 10x the finances though I'm sure they could put together something special.

From what I've seen on Corridor Crew, it seems as though much of the digital FX community share the digital models they make with one another. If someone needs to create something cheap and fast, all they have to do with download something similar to what they're looking for, tweak it a bit, and they're good to go.

I traditionally watch a movie I haven't seen before on New Year's Day. This year, it was Upgrade. And wow, this movie was fucking cool. Like others have already said, it seems like they got the most out of the budget and once the story kicked in, it got really compelling and fun. If this had come out in the 80's/early 90's, Paul Verhoeven would've definitely directed it.
