I do think that, if we want to stay alive in the long run, we are going to need to find a way to keep the forums active. That means getting bringing in new blood and keeping them around. I also think that means we need to find some way to carve our our own niche so that people will want to gravitate here when they're looking for a forum to go to. Before, we had the benefit of being maintained by and affiliated with a larger media outlet. No so here. So, what is it about us, if anything, that are going to make people want to become a part of our community over any other place they could go? 5 years ago, we could have easily created a niche market for ourselves. CS! isn't the only general movie forum to collapse or shut down. We could have easily recruited people from other places. But now, everyone has settled on social media. If you have a Twitter account and a decent amount of followers, you don't need anything else to voice your opinion on stuff. The best we could do now is target the losers who are aimlessly roaming around the Internet.

Meh... The main problem here is there are so many ways to connect now to getting in touch with people with the same hobbies and interests. That the market online has become saturated with the same offers.
So people don't really feel the need to be part of "the one place" which is one of the reasons CS! forums lost activity, the few members that actually participated and kept in touch outside of the forums is the reason were still around.
This place is not going to get that kind of activity like back in the day when CS! forums were first formed.

Well if you really wanted it to pick up and gain new members, not just be a hangout for those faithful to CS then there are a handful of things to start with.
- Register a domain and set up the site/forum on a dedicated server - Sign up with Ad whores and start to recoup what you can of your server rental costs - If Ads are doing well enough, start promoting the site with whatever money is left by hiring a SEO/promotion person or group.
After that you can either imitate CS/Joblo/SHH and post news and media on your main pages while pushing the forums. If you do not want to be a copy cat of those guys then someone has to come up with some idea to make the site worth visiting so people stick around. Maybe merge two ideas and become something of a TMZ/CS blend so you get gossip and movie nerds a place to come together.
I don't know, if I did have some good idea I might have already made my own site but as you can tell I don't have a whole bunch to contribute.
I do know that if those first few steps I mentioned are not taken, this place will just be a hangout for CS veterans and whatever random folks we can recruit on our own which is fine by me. If it has not been done I would set up an official Twitter/Facebook/Youtube page to at least help with that?
I am in no way trying to sound negative, just posting info from my own experiences hosting sites/forums, back when I did that kind of thing. I am rusty on all of this but as I always say, if I can help in anyway I will do what I can to make this site work as either our hangout or as a new movie site heavily recruiting and growing to take over the movie news industry!

But the only reason it works is because you have to keep it young. If you rely on the same people for 10 years, obviously activity is gonna collapse. New blood is what keeps a message board alive.

I know most movie sites have a story from time to time on TV shows but are there any sites that equally provide news for both movies and tv, but without the gossipy crap like Entertainment Tonight?

Let's put Dracula's and other people's reviews on a main page. Old and new.

Let's put Dracula's and other people's reviews on a main page. Old and new. If we do create our own site, and take that approach, the reviews would have to be posted in a timely fashion. Reviews for new movies would have to be posted before the movie is released, meaning getting into advance screenings, or posted on the day of release, meaning going to the midnight show and staying up all night to write the review. Otherwise, it wouldn't work. The competition is too intense.

I remember as a kid reading Nintendo Power where there was this section that had new games reviewed by 6 people. But the 6 people were marketed as certain personality types with their own specific tastes so if you saw that "your person" liked a game, you'd feel better about the review/rating.

When you mentioned reviews above I thought it would be cool for each movie to have two reviews, one from someone who loved the film and one from someone who didnt love it. Having a movie reviewed with a panel would be cool. Each could give a brief 1-2 paragraph review which would make up the entire review.

Only you could turn a brainstorming idea into six insults.
Or was it meant to be five?

Why is there any debate? If ads help make the site free then pimp it out with ads. Don't go over broad and try to keep them quiet. I'll use the ad blocker than is my brain and I'll ignore the ads but we'll still get paid coz I'll still load them on my computer.

In the end, the ads don't matter. If that's what it takes to have these boards then so be it. And if it comes to it, I'll donate some too. I've always enjoyed my time here, even if I was away for a while.
