I really want to see Last Flag Flying. I’ll have to track it down soon. I really want to see Last Flag Flying. I’ll have to track it down soon. Last Flag Flying is my most egregious missed film of 2017. Still hasn't opened near me and given my fondness for Linklater I suspect I'll dig it. I also think you assembled a pretty solid collection of lines. I really love the nominated dig from Phantom Thread. Its been on iTunes for WEEKS.

Best Line of Dialogue
This is the award I always dread the most each year, in part because I have a history of screwing up and overlooking lines that later become iconic. How was I supposed to know “I drink your milkshake” would catch on like it did? This year I was particularly nervous as I’ve done kind of a poor job of keeping track of these while I was watching the movies this time around, but hopefully it worked out. "What's my stance on 9/11? Oh um, anti. It was a tragedy, I mean we lost 19 of our best guys."- The Big Sick: There’s a scene in The Big Sick where Kumail Nanjiani is heckled by audience members accusing him of being a terrorist. You get the impression he had to deal with this kind of thing a lot and one can imagine this dark little joke being one of the comebacks he came up with for such occasions. In the film is actually comes up when a relatively sympathetic person asks him his position on 9/11, and his response is a great way to show him he asked a stupid question without coming out and telling him it’s a stupid question. “I'm sorry. I am so sorry! I just keep imagining you waking up in the morning, sir, looking in the mirror and then in all seriousness saying to yourself, ‘You know what would be a really kick-ass name? Taserface!’” –Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Shortly after Yondu’s men mutiny and kidnap Rocket with the assistance of Nebula Yondu’s first mate declares that they would now be led by him, Taserface. Despite being in clear mortal danger all Rocket can do is laugh at this ridiculous nickname and belittle him in front of the men he intends to lead. Taserface insists his name is “metaphorical” but his men clearly start to side with Rocket on this and can hardly hold back laughter. "This didn't put an end to shit, you fucking retard; this is just the fucking start. Why don't you put that on your Good Morning Missouri fucking wake up broadcast, bitch?" – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’s screenplay is filled with these immaculately crafted confections of profanity whether it’s Dixon getting a lesson on how he should respond when called a “fuckhead” or Robbie getting a lesson from his mother about using the C-word. But this little gem shouted by Mildred out the window of her car when a local TV reporter is giving a dumb summation of the whole situation really sums up just how beautifully un-PC this screenplay is going to be. “The tea is leaving, but the interruption is staying right here with me.” – Phantom Thread: Phantom Thread is full of biting one-liners that could be called “sick burns” if not for the fact that the person on the receiving end is probably not really deserving of such scorn. This little gem of meanness occurs when Woodcock’s lady tries to bring him some tea while he’s at work and he is not too happy about it even after she backtracks and leaves with it. Is this all a game for the two of them? Who can say. “Yes, [he tried to kill] me too. On many, many occasions. There was one time when we were children, he transformed himself into a snake, and he knows that I love snakes. So, I went to pick up the snake to admire it and he transformed back into himself and he was like, "Yeah, it's me!". And he stabbed me. We were eight at the time.” - Thor: Ragnarok: In this scene from Thor: Ragnarok where Thor is responding to someone’s observation that Loki once tried to kill them, Thor reveals this odd little childhood story about a prank/attempted regicide on his brother’s part. Firstly I find Thor’s apparent delight over snakes oddly charming, also the way he just throws in the fact that his brother straight up stabbed him in as an afterthought. The basic gist of the joke is that even literal gods aren’t above a little sibling rivalry. And the Golden Stake Goes To…
Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri
As stated before, Three Billboards has a bunch of slick lines like this and to some extent I am kind of rewarding a preponderance of lines with this award but this particular situation really is gold. The goofy and dismissive summation being given by that reporter does seem deserving of mockery and to have Mildred drive by at just the right time to undercut it with her un-airable diatribe is really satisfying even if they weren’t broadcasting live.

You guys don't do Google rewards? I've got 60 bucks waiting to be spent. Combined with movie pass and when TMobile gives every few weeks for s free Vudu rental... I never have to actually spend money to rent movies.

Last Flag Flying is my most egregious missed film of 2017. Still hasn't opened near me It hitting Blu Ray a few weeks ago might have something to do with it not opening near you. The indie theater where I live has to wait for major theater chains to pass on movies before they get a chance to show em, so it's not uncommon that a film gets a small theatrical run around when it hits home video.

When's the top 10 thread, Drac? Will probably start that over the weekend. I try to do that the week before the Oscars to give people as much time to catch up as possible and the Oscars are late this year because of the Olympics.

Sorry for the delay Best Original Screenplay
Unlike adapted screenplay, original screenplay was absolutely out of control this year with nearly all of the most acclaimed films of the year vying for it. Given that I had to make some tough choices for this category and really go with the movies who excel based on their writing above all else. Lady Bird: Greta Gerwig is more experienced as a writer than as a director having co-written two movies with Noah Baumbach and a couple of movies during her mumblecore days, but this is the first time she’s worked solo and really brought her own undiluted writing to the screen. Writing about your adolescence is not exactly an original way of starting your journey as a writer but, unlike most people who write these coming of age movies Gerwig isn’t a twenty year old and she’s clearly had some time to really develop this vision and brings it to the screen in a very clear-eyed and witty way. Mother!: Darren Aronofsky reportedly wrote mother! in five days over the course of a burst of inspiration, possibly while in a dark place. Though the film’s dialog isn’t bad by any means that’s not why it’s nominated here. Rather, this screenplay is here because of its wild concept and the lengths it goes to embed symbolism and to choreograph its various sequences. That big freakout towards the end must have been pretty hard to put into screenplay format without just sounding completely crazy. Phantom Thread: The genesis of Phantom Thread was apparently not unlike the genesis of mother! in that its writer was struck by inspiration while in kind of a shitty mood. Allegedly the idea came to him when he was sick in bed one day and his wife (Maya Rudolph!) was caring for him and he was touched by how tender and loving she was being and that idea sort of got twisted into the decidedly messed up relationship at the center of his latest movie. Stories like that aside this is a pretty mysterious screenplay that will need to be pieced together over time. The Square: Ruben Östlund’s The Square is a satire which uses the modern art world as a means of exploring modern class divides and the shallowness with which the intellectual class sometimes conducts itself. It’s Östlund follow-up to his film Force Majeure, which was also interested in breaking down the foibles of the upper class but this one is more direct and generally better realized. It’s the kind of screenplay that perhaps feels simple on the surface but reveals real depth as it goes on. Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri: Before he became a filmmaker Martin McDonagh started his career as a playwright, so in many ways he came into the movie business with a fully developed voice. Consequently his films have a particularly stylized form of dialog and of the five nominees this is the one that does the most to impress you with the words coming out of the characters mouths. The screenplay is also dealing with some pretty heavy themes and not dealing with them in the easiest ways. Pretty impressive. And the Golden Stake Goes To…
The Square
This was a pretty stacked category and when picking a winner I found myself ultimately going towards the movie whose overall brilliance is most tied to its writing and in this case that was The Square, a film which managed to consistently make insightful observations about society rather than go for the easy jokes about pretentious artists. It manages to make an interesting parable about class and intellectualism without being too obvious and always being able to couch it in a sort of dark cringe-comedy.

I would've gone with Three Billboards, personally. Not only was the dialogue superb, but the story continually kept me on my toes and invested. Whenever I thought it'd go left, it'd veer right. And when I thought it'd go right again, it'd veer left.

Yeah, but at this point, wouldn't it be simpler to just rent it? Oh yeah, just trying to illustrate why me, someone who has had Linklater's last three films in his top ten films of each year they were released, hasn't seen his latest yet. Sorry for the delay Best Original ScreenplayTight, tight category. I see why you went with The Square, and I'm glad it's winning at least one award here. Great film, one that does a brilliant job exploring class conflict while also injecting tremendous wit and an effective personal yarn. Three Billboards would have also been an excellent choice, and for the reasons Phantomknight stated. That said, I might have leaned towards Phantom Thread. The characters are wonderfully nuanced, the story goes to some very interesting places, and Anderson's dialogue is under-appreciated.

Best Trailer
Trailers are wildly important to movies and I’ve always admired the way certain trailer editors are able to sell their movies in interesting and energetic ways. To be featured here a trailer can’t simply present cool images from the movie in a straightforward way, it has to be doing something a little special with them. Additionally, I’ll only be considering trailers to movies that came out in 2017 (regardless of when the trailer itself came out) and which I’ve seen. I, Tonya (Red Band)
As a movie I, Tonya is kind of a hard sell. Most people don’t want anything more to do with this tabloid story and those who don’t already have an opinion about the original story likely just wouldn’t know what would be entertaining about a movie about a figure skating scandal. The trailer, set to Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4” and Gun’s “Every 1’s a Winner” emphasizes the film’s energy as well as it’s dark and vulgar sense of humor and shows how this story can seem modern and funny. Killing of a Sacred Deer (Teaser)
This teaser trailer to YL’s The Killing of a Sacred Deer does exactly what a trailer for such an unusual film should do. The trailer uses an odd moment from the film where a teenage girl sings Ellie Goulding’s “Burn” as it’s backing music along with some ominous horror movie music to present some of the film’s more tantalizing images and give a taste of its story without ever really coming out and explaining it. I also love the way it ends with that “so we can put it out, out, out…” Logan (Red Band)
When making a trailer for an X-Men spinoff the first instinct would have been to focus in on the action elements and do everything one can to make it look like the movies that came before, but instead this trailer focus in on the things that make this spinoff different. Set to Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt,” a song choice that both emphasizes the characters’ pain and the film’s western tone, the trailer teases some of the better images from the film without giving away too much. T2: Trainspotting
When the “choose life” monolog is revived and updated in this unlikely sequel to Trainspotting it’s not in the opening scene but is instead in a restaurant and spoken by a much less cocky middle aged man. For the trailer though they use this audio along with clips from the movie to recreate that iconic opening of the original film but to reflect how different this world and these people are. The electronic music underneath it all helps to give it a distinct flavor from that original movie too. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (Red Band)
This trailer for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Mssouri borders on being spoilery but it does to good a job of selling the movie to be ignored. Most trailers for a movie like this would have tried to smooth off the rough edges of a movie like this but this one leans into it, laying out the premise in an economic fashion and also establishing its tone and sense of humor very honestly. It also picks up a lot of energy when The Four Tops’ “Walk Away” kicks in and synchs certain moments like Dixon breaking the window quite well. And the Golden Stake Goes to…
LoganUsing an American Recordings era Johnny Cash song is not exactly the most original idea for a western tinged movie. True Grit’s Golden Stake winning trailer made use of “The Man Comes Around” (a song used in the credits to Logan) for example, but given that James Mangold directed Walk the Line I probably shouldn’t be giving him lectures about when to use Johnny Cash music. I just love how this trailer manages to make this movie look big while still giving the impression that it’s only shown the tip of the iceberg and that it sells the movie as honestly as it does.
