So now that old Doomsday has a baby on board it's been a little more challenging to sit down and watch a 2 hour movie, let alone sneak out to a theater to see one or two of them. One thing I've started doing however is beefing up my little film book library and have made a few pretty nice additions. One publisher that has a lot of great (albeit expensive) titles is Taschen. They have volumes dedicated to certain filmmakers and genres and they go deep. They also have a few pretty awesome gems that come with some of them, for example my copy of the Charlie Chaplin Archives has a 12 frame 35mm strip from an original print of City Lights. Anyways, here's what I've picked up so far. I should note that all these are pretty-in depth. This one features Kubrick's films and has hundreds of photos ranging from on-set to his personal life. I've read much of it and used it as a companion piece while rewatching some. Tons of essays about the Godfather production and beyond. Lots of production photos to go with it. Definitely a great pick-up if you're a fan. A history of film noir and a collection of essays highlighting dozens of them. It's definitely given me a list of movies to burn through in the future. Much like the Kubrick archives, this has a detailed history of Chaplin's start in vaudeville, his work with Mack Senate all the way through his more popular films and into his later years. Also, that film strip is incredible. I recommend any and all of these if you're looking for some good film reading. If you have any others that you enjoy please feel free to share, I need something to keep me entertained that isn't too loud.

I'm bumping this wildly popular thread because I got this book as a Christmas gift. It's pretty rad, lots of cool stories about movie stars I've never heard of or completely forgot about. It's also got a nice section at the end on Paul Newman's The Silver Chalice which I'm going to recommend to everyone in the film club from now on. PG Cooper you should assign this to your students.

I've read The Men Who Would Be King. They write about Spielberg like he's a little girl.

I haven't heard of the Coen Bros. book but it sounds really cool, I'm adding it to my list. I've already flipped through it a little, and it looks like it's going to be a great, fascinating read. It goes deep on all their movies up through Hail, Caesar!

Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino Release: October 25, 2022 The long-awaited first work of nonfiction from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: a deliriously entertaining, wickedly intelligent cinema book as unique and creative as anything by Quentin Tarantino.
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QT’s and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever. www.amazon.com/dp/0063112582/?coliid=I3VQT27E4KHSC0&colid=H8C3D5XOQNNP&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it_im

1godzillafan Doomsday SnoBorderZerowww.rollingstone.com/product-recommendations/books/jennette-mccurdy-book-memoir-buy-read-online-1395302/Jennette McCurdy’s Revelatory Memoir Sells Out on Amazon, One Day After Release
Centered around the abuse McCurdy suffered from her mother, and the treatment of child stars at Nickelodeon, the actress’ new book soars to the top of the bestsellers charts onlineJennette McCurdy’s new memoir is a barrage of bombshells, beginning with its title: I’m Glad My Mom Died. And people are taking notice, as the book soared to #4 on Amazon’s best-seller charts (and #2 in memoirs), before the physical copy sold out on Amazon altogether. Luckily, you can still pick up the former Nickelodeon star’s tell-all at Target.com, or buy the Kindle e-book on Amazon (Amazon is also expected to re-stock the book online here). I’m Glad My Mom Died centers around the abuse McCurdy suffered from her mother, but it also recounts the manipulative, inappropriate treatment of child stars at Nickelodeon. Although some have been critical of McCurdy’s title, the overall response has been positive. “There shouldn’t be no Jennette McCurdy discourse tbh – just endless support,” reads one Tweet that received 110,00 Likes. In the book, the iCarly star remembers anorexia-inducing body shaming, manipulation through her mother’s religion (Mormonism), and falsified paternity — all at the hands of her mom. “I’m in the ICU with my dying mother,” writes the 30-year-old, “and the thing that I’m sure will get her to wake up is the fact that in the days since mom’s been hospitalized, my fear and sadness have morphed into the perfect anorexia-motivation cocktail and, finally, I have achieved mom’s current goal weight for me. Eighty-nine pounds.” The memoir also delves into the underbelly of Nickelodeon. McCurdy was one of the network’s stars in the late oughts and 2010s, playing Sam in iCarly and the show’s spin-off, Sam & Cat, with Ariana Grande. At Nickelodeon, “The Creator” (who is likely iCarly’s creator and producer, Dan Schneider) pressured McCurdy to wear bikinis, drink alcohol before she was of legal drinking age, and massaged her without consent. “I want to say something, to tell him to stop,” she writes, “but I’m so scared of offending him.” At one point, McCurdy declined $300,000 in hush money from the network. McCurdy also details frustrations with Ariana Grande, her co-star on Sam & Cat, who was allowed to ditch filming sessions for other opportunities, while McCurdy was not. “So I have to turn down movies while Ariana’s off whistle-toning at the Billboard Music Awards? Fuck. This,” writes McCurdy. Pick up I’m Glad My Mom Died now at Target.com, or buy the Kindle version on Amazon.com. http://instagram.com/p/ChAPYhQOz2w

Sounds like an intense/interesting read even though iCarly was after my time. Only Frizzo or Jibbs would remember Ahh Real Monsters or You Can't Do That On Television.

Our era was original NickToons (Doug, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy), Clarissa Explains It All, Salute Your Shorts, Pete & Pete, All That, Kenan & Kel, Double Dare, Nick Arcade, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Wild & Crazy Kids, Ureka’s Castle and the list goes on. But I’m also familiar of Drake & Josh and iCarly and Victorious and SpongeBob and Fairly Oddparents and Avatar/Korra and all the other PG Cooper era shows.
