Do you ever feel ashamed to find a cartoon character attractive? Our generation has been plagued by that problem ever since Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The Mandy Moore-voiced Rapunzel in Tangled has put us a step closer into turning into Japan.
Anyway, Tangled is another attempt by the John Lassetter-runned Disney to resurrect the Animation department that died when Jeffrey Katzenberg angrily left the studio in 1994. Bolt, The Princess and the Frog, and Tangled have been an improvement over what we were getting throughout most of the `2000s, but they haven't captured the magic yet. Tangled has good ideas, but they weren't well-executed. The story was flat, the characters needed a bit more of development, and the humor was off for the most part. To make matters worse, Alan Menken, the genius who provided the songs for the classic Disney films of the `90s and 2007's Enchanted didn't do a very good job. The songs here, um, kinda sucked. Although I've read reports that Lassetter was messing around with the music since Pixar has never really made musicals and he doesn't fully understand the process. So, maybe Menken isn't to blame.
I love John Lassetter, but maybe he should step back a bit when working for Disney. Pixar and Disney make radically different movies. Toy Story and Snow White were both great, but clearly followed different formulas. Lasstter really doesn't understand how to make a Disney flick. He's just a man with good taste. That's why it's nice to have him around, but it's not good enough to be the driving creative force. If Enchanted proved anything it's that there's still people at Disney who know how to bring the magic back. Maybe they should be running the show.
