As you've probably seen by now, Justice League is looking to lose anywhere between $50-$100 million. Those aren't just bad numbers, those are Geostorm bad. It's not totally surprising since almost all their movies got trash reviews and were generally disliked overall despite the fact that until Justice League they all made boatloads of cash. Man of Steel wasn't good (agree to disagree), Batman v Superman was worse, and I turned off Suicide Squad after about 30 minutes because it's unwatchable. Wonder Woman wasn't bad but compared to the other three it's a masterpiece. Now Justice League is out, it's supposed to be another shit show only this time it's going down on all fronts.
All that said, me and another guy at work had a pretty lengthy talk today about how Warner Bros. could right the ship as best they could and what a guaranteed money-maker might be. And not only money-maker, something that people would actually look forward to. I won't go so far as to say that the DC universe is dead (it should be) but assuming that they scratch some of it, we both thought that there could be one Hail Mary they could try. Maybe, just maybe there's the slimmest of possibilities, a 15% chance or so, that WB throws a boat load of money Christopher Nolan's way to make a fourth Dark Knight movie. Now like I said, it probably won't happen but at the same time WB is beginning to look pretty desperate. They have Aquaman already filmed so that's coming out regardless, Wonder Woman 2 is definitely on the fast track but other than that there's not much else. Ben Affleck is almost certainly done with Batman, he bailed on his solo Batman movie so that's gone and who knows if they're going to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into another Justice League movie that fewer and fewer people want to see. I guess even comic book fans get tired of being burned after a while. I know it sounds crazy but I bet there's somebody in one of those WB boardrooms who's thinking 'maybe we should give Nolan another call.' Points to consider:
Reasons to do a 4th DK movie:
-WB botched their planned DC universe. So far they've made 4 movies and all but one are just awful. How much more are they going to sink into this hoping that people keep showing up?
-The most popular superhero, Batman, needs to be recast anyways. Are they planning on recasting him again just so they can continue this crappy cinematic universe?
-Even some of the people who helped make Dark Knight Rises say that it was a missed opportunity. As the hype wore down a lot of people realized it's really not that good of a movie at all so it's not like they went out on a high note. Dark Knight 4 could be another stab at the franchise while going out on that high note while telling a self-contained Batman story. Killing off the JGL character immediately would be a good start.
-Chris Nolan is one of the handful of directors, literally 4 or 5, who can sell a movie based on name recognition alone.
-Automatic, insane instant hype.
Reasons not to do a 4th DK movie:
-It's not like Chris Nolan or Christian Bale are hurting for work. They're bigger than they've ever been so why would they need this?
-Dark Knight Rises already played the whole 'Batman coming back' angle. It would feel redundant
-The final shot of Dark Knight Rises ends with Bruce Wayne hanging it up which also would be weird to backpedal on. At the same time though I can't see Bruce Wayne going 'well that's it' and going on permanent vacation like he did at the end. I know, I've read Dark Knight Returns but he comes back in that too. I feel like they veered off the road with Bruce Wayne's motivations in Dark Knight Rises and while a fourth movie could rectify that it would be hard not to come off as redundant.
Anyways, we had a nice little talk and I'm sure there's a lot I didn't include here. While I've gone on the record saying that the Nolan movies certainly aren't my favorite I would welcome a 4th one with open arms before seeing anything that DC stuff that WB is shitting out nowadays. Thoughts, if any?
