This sounds dubious at best. If Sony has the rights to Morbius, it would have to be a recent acquisition, and that doesn't seem bloody likely. In the Blade II commentary track, it was revealed that an early draft of the script featured Morbius as the first of the new breed of vampire. While del Torro ultimately went another way, it wasn't because New Line Cinema didn't own the rights to the character. The Blade license gave them access to all of the vampire characters of Marvel Comics.

Before the Spider-Man 3 fiasco, Raimi & Co. were expected to make 6 movies. Morbius was supposed to be in part 4 with the Lizard. The outline, if I recall correctly, was: Part 3: Sandman/Harry Part 4: Lizard/Morbius (with Peter mutating as well) Part 5: Chameleon (it's why Peter’s landlord was Russian) / Vulture Part 6: Some version of the Sinister Six All that was tossed away when they forced Raimi to use Venom in Part 3.

I actually recall a different version of this story way back when the film was first released saying that Nomak was initially Morbius but they had to change it because Marvel had sold the rights to the Morbius character to Artisan (which eventually was purchased by Lionsgate). I don't recall if the commentary for Blade II contradicted this story, as I haven't listened to it in over a decade. But the fact still remains that Sony never really had claim to the character despite his history with Spider-Man, similarly to how they never had claim to the Kingpin. It might be possible that Morbius might have a grey area contract, like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch which allowed both Fox and Disney to use the characters. But if it did it would have had to be a renegotiation, perhaps in the deal that allowed Spidey into the MCU. Maybe Sony recieved a character expansion in return?

They got Morbius when Sam Raimi was still around. After Spider-Man 2 came out, they revealed they had Raimi for 6 movies total. Whether he was gonna direct 4 more movies or just produce was never settled. Morbius is one of the characters he wanted to use.

Oooooooh, if this were Marvel Studios imagine the ruckus it would cause.
Hopefully he's finds better inspiration for this role than the Joker

Shooting begins in February Doomsday , are you working on this movie? Hell no, not after the shit that Venom went through. A thread for my next gig has already been created on here but considering how I'm Facebook friends with a number of CS!-ites I'm going to sit on it for a while.

Now that both Venom and Into the Spider-Verse are successful, it looks as though Sony is going to throw every Marvel license they've got their grubby little hands on up onto the silver screen. Silver Sable and Black Cat will be on the release schedule any day now.
Morbius is an interesting character with lots of potential. It's a shame he's not a Marvel Studios. It's also a shame that Marvel Studios hasn't been doing anything with their horror characters. Hopefully they'll start doing something with them, now that they'll have Fox to use for the release of movies that aren't family friendly.

Well, it certainly looks like it came from the studio that brought us Venom.
