Next to It's a Wonderful Life, the most homaged and parodied movie is Groundhog Day. Adding another one to the list is Happy Death Day. It's a horror-comedy about a college girl who will continue to relive her birthday until she can solve her own murder. "What a tweest" said no one. The good news is... the movie is kind of a joke. The filmmakers knew exactly what everyone was thinking and kinda fuck with everyone. Remember the scene in Man on the Moon, the Andy Kaufman biopic starring Jim Carrey, where Andy purposely messes with the image quality of a TV program so viewers would walk over to the TV set and bang on it? That's kinda what watching Happy Death Day feels like. It's interesting to say the least, but it could have gotten old very quick if it weren't for the lead actress. This could potentially be a star making performance for her. She's amazing. I'd give her the Oscar right now. Jessica Rothe is her name. She's a 30-year-old nobody that went for the home run her first time at bat. She's hilarious. She gives a legitimate dramatic performance. She's a bitch. She's sympathetic. She's a scream queen. She's a badass. This is literally her fucking acting reel. Doomsday. SnoBorderZero. Put this chick in your movie before someone steals her away. Just don't pull a Harvey Weinstein. Anyway... as I said... it's an interesting movie. Not good. Not bad. Just interesting.

I watched this last night, and...yeah, 'interesting' is the right word to describe this movie. Entertaining, but also very middle-of-the-road overall. Jessica Rothe is easily the best thing about it, but there were a couple of darkly funny moments, and the movie was wise not to take itself seriously. Though I was able to peg who the killer was pretty early on. A breezy, fun watch, but also nothing special.

This wasn't that bad. Pretty tame for a so called slasher movie, don't think you actually saw one kill. I didn't hate it. Doubt I would recommend it or watch it again, but I didn't hate it.

I peered into the vastness and saw nothing. Felt nothing.

I found the trailer for the sequel mildly interesting so I decided to finally watch the first. Hated it.

I'm surprised at how much I'm looking forward to the sequel.

With the sequel coming out my interest in this film spiked a bit too, but I can't find it on streaming anywhere. It's for sale on Vudu but they don't have a rental for some reason.

If you have access to Cinemax, it's on there. If not, you can do a free week trial of Cinemax on Hulu or Amazon Prime and watch it that way.

Caught this on cable one night with my wife. It was better than I expected, but I really wasn't expecting a lot. The female lead really carried the movie.

I just watched both the first and 2U. The first is nothing special, but it was fun to watch. Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow have a leg up on it though.
I thought 2U would be the same except...more. To an extent it is, but they threw bigger and crazier plot points into it that made it not wear out its welcome. It pretty much went down the Crank 2 route of sequel making.
The only real issue I had with the second was that the killer at the end is obvious (there's one at the beginning that is like "WTF is going on?"). The mystery in the original worked somewhat because there were multiple red herrings and the killer had some decent misdirection away from her. In 2U they shy away from the mystery mostly and don't dwell on it. When they finally reveal who it is it's the person I suspected halfway through because they're the only one with an established motive in the movie.
