Drew's adapted screenplay for The Martian was astoundingly loyal to the source material. His previous directorial outing with Cabin in the Woods was fantastic as well.
With a film version of The New Mutants on it's way, I can't help but wonder if those characters are going to be recruited into the X-Force film. That's the way it was done in the comics, but not until 100 issues worth of New Mutants comics had been published. At various points in the title, the team had been mentored by both Xavier and Magneto before Cable came along. If memory serves, there was also a brief stint early on for some of the characters with Emma Frost during the time she was still a bad guy and running a teen team called The Hellions.
There have been numerous incarnations of X-Force over the decades at this point, so Goddard has a lot to choose from.

This project was dead until Ryan Reynolds brought it back to life.

Of course, but Deadpool's first appearance was in X-Force #1, which featured the former members of The New Mutants on the team.

So you're saying Deadpool 2 and New Mutants are the lead in's to X Force? I'm saying it's a possibility, nothing more. With Fox, there's no telling what they're planning. When it comes to the X-Men franchise, they have a checkered history. I'd like to think that Drew Goddard's involvement means we're getting something great, but the reality is that it's very early into pre-production. An exit due to "creative differences" could be announced at any time. The next thing you know, Fox has replaced Drew with Paul Feig, McG or Ratner.

Deadpool 2 and New Mutants wrapped principle photography this month. Yes, they were being made at the same time. If they're supposed to lead into X-Force, that's gonna happen regardless of Drew Goddard's involvement.

Joss Whedon was in a comparable position when he wrote The Avengers. Drew will have to work with what's come before as a starting point.
