The Equalizer is the B-reel from all of Denzel's previous films of the past 10 years. It tries to be a spy/Taken sendoff but it fails on that end. In fact it fails on every end.
Denzel plays Bob McCall, a worker at Home Depot knockoff 'Home Mart.' Every night at around 2am he goes to his local coffee shop to drink tea and read his book. It's also the same coffee shop frequented by the hooligans of the city along with Alynna, a friendly prostitute. After she's roughed up by her employer, a deranged Russian gangster, he takes matters into his own hands. Oh yeah, he's also ex-CIA so he's able to kill everybody. Unfortunately this could have been a gritty, exciting Man on Fire type movie that would have been entertaining if not wholly original. Rather, it's a choppy mess that isn't exciting and very uneven. Several times in the movie McCall goes out of his way to help people who have no bearing on the actual story. He prevents a woman from being extorted by crooked cops, he helps a woman at his work after he's robbed and the Russians themselves who seem to not know the first thing about tracking or killing anyone. It also leads into a terribly overlong Home Alone style climax in the 'Home Mart' that is completely out of place and anti-climactic. By that time you're already bored enough as it is, do you really want to see Denzel setting booby traps in the lumber aisle?
The Equalizer unfortunately is a forgettable mess, something that seems like it was slapped together with no real care or interest. Not Godzilla-bad, however I doubt I'll see a movie worse than this for a while.
