RESCUE RANGERS TO THE RESCUE (1989)When Detective Drake and his canine partner Plato are framed for a crime they didn't commit, it's up to the Rescue Rangers to capture the real bad guys and clear Drake and Plato's name. The premise for the series is outlined in this TV movie. Chip n Dale and their colleagues Gadget, Monterey Jack and Zipper operate as the last line of defense against those who dare to harm the city. As the theme song states, no case is too big and no case is too small. They're vigilantes that do what must be done. Here they go up against mob boss Klordane, his feline partner Fat Cat and mad scientist Professor Nimnul. Their scheme is to rob the city's gold depository while the police are busy dealing with Drake and Plato. The animation, by Disney's Japanese studio, rival's that of the feature film department. The voice acting is great. And the music is decent. Only flaw is that it gets stale after a while. Unlike Ducktales' Treasure of the Golden Sun which had energy from beginning to end, the story here was stretched too thin. It would have worked best as a 2-part episode instead of the 90+ minute running time. B+

PLUNDER AND LIGHTNING (1990)TaleSpin is awesome. The Jungle Book, animation or otherwise, can go suck a dick. This Emmy Award Winning TV Movie cuts to the chase. It introduces all the characters quickly, gets right to the action and tells a tightly written story. Cargo pilot Baloo and his young navigator Kit Cloudkicker are on the run from air pirates. They've taken a crystal they're selling to Shere Khan for $100,000. Baloo plans on using the money to buy his plane from his boss Rebecca Cunningham and live that life of... bare necessities. It's action-packed. Well-acted. Great music. It soars above Ducktales' Treasure of the Golden Suns. A+

DARKLY DAWNS THE DUCK (1991)I'm surprised this is PhantomKnight 's favorite cartoon. They amped the comedy. DuckTales, Chip n Dale and TaleSpin had humor but they were mostly story-driven action-adventure shows. Darkwing Duck is a farce. It paved the way for Goof Troop, Bonkers and the later Disney Afternoon shows. This two-part premiere establishes Darkwing Duck as a buffoon. It partners him up with Lunchpad McQuack, another buffoon. And adds a tough little girl played by Chucky from Rugrats. They save the day through pure luck. Nothing wrong with that. I enjoy the show. I enjoyed it as a kid. But it is jarring when compared to what proceeded it. B

Actually, it's between this and Batman: TAS for my favorite cartoon. But Darkwing Duck's farcical nature is exactly WHY I love it so much, especially looking back on it now all these years later, cause it definitely holds up and is even more entertaining now that I can appreciate the farce even more.
