A piece of SDCC info that I forgot to post until now is that a Spawn movie with Todd McFarlane as the director is actually going to happen. It's being done through Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, Split, Get Out), but it looks as though the budget is coming from Todd McFarlane Productions. I guess Todd finally realized that the only way anybody was going to let him direct is if he paid for it himself, so he is.

I'd say it's long past time. It's probably too late for a Spawn movie to be much of a draw. Since it's a Blumhouse production the budget can be counted on to be fairly low, so it has a strong chance of making a profit. I doubt it will be a big profit, but Todd will probably be happy if he doesn't lose his shirt. If he's smart, he will have an experienced filmmaker on hand to guide him.

Well, it looks like Todd's Spawn movie may not be happening after all. He did an interview today on Collider, and when asked what's happening with the production, he responded with, "Putting the financing together." Considering that previously, Todd McFarlane Productions was financing the flick, it sounds as though somebody finally talked some sense into him. Rule #1 in Hollywood is NEVER use your own money. He's been trying to find outside financing for this thing for the past twenty years, and hasn't found anyone crazy enough to allow him to direct yet.

The director stating this:
doesn't exactly fill me with much confidence. Especially if he still attempts trying to make it with a lower budget.

Knowing Todd he already spent the meager budget just on getting spawns insanely long cape ripped to look just 'badass' and 'cool' enough.

Unless the idea is that he's hoping to land a bigger budget now and the Blumhouse deal is done and gone. Because Spawn already was going to be difficult to pull off on a lower budget with the way he looks and acts, but if the director is only concerned about his looks and not so much about the story? Yeah, it doesn't exactly add up.

I suspect that his disregard for a quality story or serious character development is part of the sales pitch he gives to any prospective investors. He just can't help but convey that attitude, as it's a part of his core personality. The only way a low-budget Spawn movie is going to be a big hit that makes an investor lots of money is if there's a good enough story with strong enough characters to make up for the lack of visual FX that would usually be called for.
