As a stereotypical American, I had no idea what the fuck Dun-Kirk is. If Christopher Nolan explained it correctly, it's about an evacuation in France and/or Belgium during World War II. The Germans are making their way through England so Winston Churchill gave the order to let the French deal with their own problems and get his troops back on British soil. Again, that's what I understood from the movie. Don't attack me, history buffs.
The story is told through three points-of-view. There's Harry Styles and two nobody actors trying to get the fuck out of Dun-kirk. There's the BFG as a civilian trying to rescue soldiers in his tiny boat. And there's Tom Hardy as a pilot killin' Nazi's. It's sort-of presented in non-linear fashion. Prepare to be a tad confused at times. Nolan and Lee Smith aren't winning Best Director and Best Editor at the Oscars.
Overall... it's okay. This isn't Nolan's masterpiece... or anywhere near it. It's just above Insomnia and right below Interstellar. As a survival story, it's whatever. It's just people running around and hiding and running around some more. The pilot stuff with Hardy is generic as fuck. The most interesting part is probably the BFG and his tiny boat saving people. I would have been okay with just that being the movie.

Wow, even below Dark Knight Rises.
So what is it about the movie that you think is getting it the good reviews? Are the battle scenes good? Acting? Or is this just critics polishing Nolan's knob?

I've seen several reviews so far that are far from enthusiastic. A lot of audience commentary is on technical aspects. This is a movie people will forget in 6 months. Compare this to Dark Knight in which the response was on characters and story. Nolan has moved away from what made him famous. He's too caught up on spectacle. I wanna see him go back to a Memento or Prestige type movie.

Dunkirk Review
It was okay. It's like if you watched Pearl Harbor. But you skipped the first one and a half hour and went straight to the battle.
You don't get any stories of these characters who are fighting, no background or anything.
Just 3 battle scenes, land, ship, and air in less than 2 hours running time.
It left me wanting more in the end.
6/10

Saw this yesterday, in 70MM Imax, which was pretty cool.
Overall, I really liked it. It was a very tightly made film, and it was pretty intense throughout. The opening 5 minutes or so were really well done. Good incorporation of the music throughout, the sound was top notch, and some great cinematography, especially the shots of the sea. There is a really cool one of Tom Hardy's character towards the end.
I guess there could have been a little more fleshing out in terms of character, so maybe Nolan could have added another 10 minutes or so, but I don't know. I think one of the overall strengths of this is the length, and how compact the movie feels. No standout acting, really, but solid all around. Mark Rylance is probably given the most to do. A lot was made of the dialogue, or lack thereof, which really adds to the feeling of tension. For me, those were some of the best moments in the movie. I do love how your dropped right into the conflict, and the movie just goes. It doesn't really give the audience time to catch up.
In terms of how I view it against the rest of Nolan, I'd say its in the upper tier. For me, it's better than Insomnia, Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar. The only one of his I haven't seen is Following, and It's been a while since I have seen The Prestige. So it's somewhere near the other 4, for me. Inception is probably still my favorite.
One of my favorites of the year, for sure. Want to see it again.

2 of my friends just said it's better than "Saving Private Ryan" What is happening!? Saving Private Ryan is an important film and a great one in many respects, but it isn't some unassailable masterpiece. The bookends, for example, are ridiculously hokey and nothing in Dunkirk is as disingenuously sentimental as that. Anyway, regarding Dunkirk, I loved it. Endlessly tense but quietly inspiring. The film is ultimately about people doing good deeds but it certainly isn't blind to the hardships faced or the lasting effects they had. I was gripped from start to finish and found myself moved by the end in spite of the limited characterization. It's certainly a sparse film in terms of plot and dialogue, but it's all very effective and all told it was exciting to see a fairly unconventional structure applied to a big Hollywood war movie. On that note, the non-chronological structure and time bending are very Nolan-esque. The film fits right in with the rest of his filmography. Great film and easily among the year's best. It probably does rank in the bottom half of Nolan's filmography, but that speaks more to how good Nolan's films have generally been.
