Me live-blogging my thoughts as I read through the list for the first time.
-Awesome. Clerks deserves to be here. It's an important movie and Smith's recent career does not diminish that.
-The Ice Storm is an underrated gem. I'd probably rank it higher.
-Billy Madison? I guess Sandler's comedies were a big deal in the day but that movie does not hold up at all.
-Not exactly jazzed with Dumb and Dumber either, but I'll back off before
Neverending accuses me of hating comedies.
-Only at 84 and already there's a bunch of people about young dudes just sorta hangin. Clerks, Swingers, Singles.
-First Canadian film and I've never heard of it. I ain't no patriot.
-Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It should be higher but I'm happy it made the list at all.
-Shawshank not even cracking the top 50 feels like a backlash against the film's popularity.
-T2>Titanic. Good call, Rolling Stone.
-Friday is ahead of Schindler's List, The Shawshank Redemption, Terminator 2, Edward Scissorhands, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Before Sunrise...
-Jackie Brown with solid placement. Good. That movie doesn't get the respect it deserves. Should probably be higher.
-Clueless? I don't wanna rag on a movie I haven't seen, but a lot of these entries seem more hear for their place in pop-culture and a general popularity with the youth today than cinematic quality.
-Seven at 56. Means this list is incorrectly going to label Fight Club Fincher's best film of the 90s.
-South Park!
-L.A. Confidential would probably be in my top ten of the 90s, but I'll settle with top 50.
-I should probably revisit The Double Life of Veronique.
-Unforgiven is way too low. Come at me,
Neverending-Altman's The Player is pretty dope. Hopefully Short Cuts shows up.
-The Big Lebowski is the comedy of the 90s. Can't think of another that could rank above it.
-Kinda surprised Mononoke isn't higher. Not saying I disagree, just thought it might have the right mix of class and widespread appeal to climb into the top 20.
-Magnolia, my favourite film of the 90s, comes in at 26. That's fair, I suppose. My investment in the film drives deep from a personal attachment to it.
-Kubrick's final film deservedly makes the cut.
-Yup, there's Fight Club at 19. Love the movie but I love Seven more.
-Reservoir Dogs at 16? No. Entertaining as all hell and important, but the older I get the less special Dogs seems.
-Won me back by having The Matrix so high.
-Fargo out of the top ten. Shocking.
-I do not see what's so special about The Piano. Number ten is shocking.
-Haven't seen Chungking Express, but it's on my PVR so I'll hit it up soon.
-Malcolm X. Great choice, great movie.
-Slacker? Slacker!?!? I like Slacker, but it's not top ten worthy. Linklater's Dazed and Confused and Before Sunrise are both way better. Sunrise especially. The fuck you smoking, Rolling Stone?
-Maybe I should watch Close-Up again. Didn't do that much for me.
-Pulp Fiction and Silence of the Lambs in the top five makes me happy.
-Never seen Safe.
-I don't blend documentary with non-doc, but I guess I see why Hoop Dreams made it so high.
-Goodfellas at number one. Objectively that's probably the right choice.
