The kangaroo court of the apes is in session. Is this Planet of the Apes, or Inherit the Wind?

A lobotomy for Landon? That doesn't seem suspicious at all...

Wait, what just happened? The lead Judge just made a lead-up to resolving the charges against Taylor, only to say, "This hearing is adjourned" without actually pronouncing a verdict.

Okay, now we're in Dr. Zaius' office, and he's saying the verdict is in. Rod Serling clearly never worked in courtroom drama, or at least not accurate ones. He's just using legal terms that sound right to him.

Now Dr. Zaius spells things out for those in the audience who don't understand that the primary purpose of Taylor's trial was to discredit Zira and Cornelius. Tell me what I want to hear, and you can keep your manhood.

I'm curious about what the feminists thought of Nova in 1968. A beautiful bikini clad girl, utterly silent, totally subservient, dependent upon others for everything. Michael Bay's ideal woman.

Escape from the ape village is much easier at night. Why is Zira ordering Taylor to change into a new loincloth that is identical to the one he's already wearing, dirt and all?

Taylor can't open his cage, even when the key has been left in the lock. Are we sure he's intelligent? People keep talking about "another jungle", even though we've seen nothing but forest so far.

Zira and Cornelius are under the delusion that finding proof of their assertions in the Forbidden Zone will exonerate them. Denial, it's not just for humans!

They all go right past the scarecrows without a word. I guess they're just there to look creepy.

Still no more weird lightning. Nothing seems to be coming of that, either. A day at the beach in the Forbidden Zone.

Dr. Zaius and his troops arrive, but don't worry. A white man with blonde hair and blue eyes is here to show you all the way! He played Moses. You can trust him. We've come so far since '68. This sort of thing never happens in modern films. Right...?

A baby doll with a voice mechanism that still works after being buried for more than two thousand years? That's quality craftsmanship!

Dr. Zaius' scroll regarding mankind is classic Rod Serling. It's hard to argue against, and Taylor wisely doesn't bother trying. He said pretty much the same thing during his opening exposition, although with more self satisfaction, thinking that he himself was above all that. Taylor doesn't seem so sure anymore.

The big reveal. Even as an eight year old watching this for the first time on a 13" black and white TV, I immediately recognized the tiny glimpses of Lady Liberty before the wide shot. At the time however, I didn't know enough about the geography of New York to wonder why she's next to a giant cliff. I discovered the other day that this is the same cliff that Tony Stark's Malibu Dreamhouse is built in Iron Man.

The sound of the surf continuing during the credits without any music is a nice touch. Ominous and haunting.

The original Planet of the Apes is a classic, but I wonder how well it could hold the attention of a Millennial audience. There are no explosions, no big action set pieces, or any of the other things they've grown accustomed to in a sci-fi movie. It's a thinking person's sci-fi, and these days those tend to be more grounded, such as Moon or Under the Skin.

Rated G for Adult themes, violence, nudity, language and disturbing content. Kids weren't pussies back then.

This is a movie where apes represent black people. I expect nothing less than a black guy getting killed right away.
