A few years ago, I read a suggestion on how to fix the Academy Awards. We all know how much Dracula and PG Cooper love those, but this one was genuinely interesting. WHAT IF... we treated the Academy Awards like a sport. In sports you have conference finals, a.k.a. the playoffs, and then the championship. How would you apply that to the arts and entertainment? Simple. Break it into semesters. As of today, we have completed 6 months of 2017. WHAT IF... the best movies from January to June competed with the best movies from July to December? Doomsday and Wyldstaar are rolling their eyes but HOLD ON because I think in 2017 it can be done. I have not seen everything but I have enough to construct a list and you guys are more than welcomed to add to that list or just dispute it. Let's do this. BEST PICTUREBaby Driver Get Out BEST DIRECTOREdgar Wright, Baby Driver Jordan Peele, Get Out BEST ACTORHugh Jackman, Logan James McAvoy, Split BEST ACTRESSAllison Williams, Get Out BEST SUPPORTING ACTORPatrick Stewart, Logan BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESSCatherine Keener, Get Out BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAYGet Out BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAYLogan BEST CINEMATOGRAPHYBaby Driver Get Out Ghost in the Shell Kong: Skull Island BEST EDITINGBaby Driver Get Out BEST PRODUCTION DESIGNGhost in the Shell Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Split BEST COSTUME DESIGNGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Ghost in the Shell BEST MAKE-UPGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Logan BEST SCOREGet Out BEST SONG"Evermore" from Beauty and the Beast BEST SOUND EDITINGBaby Driver BEST SOUND MIXINGBaby Driver Get Out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 BEST VISUAL EFFECTSGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Kong: Skull Island Okay... maybe I over-stretched myself... but let's see what July to December have in store. War for the Planet of the Apes... Dunkirk... Blade Runner 2049... Thor: Ragnarok... The Last Jedi... Oscar bait.

If we're doing sports, Deexan demands a relegation system.

I don't particularly care about The Oscars. It's always nice when a movie you love wins such a prestigious award, but a look at the nominees vs the winners often makes it crystal clear that the more deserving film lost. Many times the best film not only loses, but does so to a clearly inferior film that only won due to momentary popularity rather than lasting quality.

Isn't that supposed to be great? Get Out/Baby Driver level great? People are also praising The Big Sick, or whatever the fuck it's called, although I suspect it'll be overrated. Beguiled is supposed to be good. It won at Cannes, I think. So there's at least 5 candidates out already... 6 if someone has the balls to champion Split.

I probably won't see The Big Sick, although I was planning to do so. Despite The Alamo playing trailers for it every time I've been there for the past couple of months, they're not actually screening the film, and none of my other local theaters are, either.

This is every new release I've seen in a theater so far this year, in order of preference. Didn't see a few I wish I had, such as Get Out.
Baby Driver Logan Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 Split Free Fire Lego Batman Wonder Woman Colossal John Wick 2 Alien: Covenant Kong: Skull Island Life Ghost in the Shell The Mummy It Comes At Night

Completely forgot about that one. It got a very limited release the same weekend as Fast 8. It was not a good week for quality film. If Free Fire had been released in January or February, it would have been golden.
