It built to a climax so intense I could barely breathe. ....yes, that's true. I would have preferred a climax, though, not just a build up to it.

Let me ask something to those who didn't like it. Not as a jab or anything, but out of legitimate curiosity: if the marketing had represented the movie more accurately, would it have affected your expectations or opinion in any way? Personally, I feel like I got what I expected, and going in with that mindset helped the film be all the more satisfying to me. So satisfying, in fact, that it's a movie I'm looking forward to re-watching more times because it feels like I'll be able to get something new out of it each time. I've already bought the Blu-Ray (which comes with a FREE Digital Copy, Neverending) and am going to watch it again in the next couple of days.

Nothing is free if you've given them money for it already.
And no I knew what to expect it just wasn't very compelling at all, I wanted more background on what happened, more focus on how they survived in a day to day sense. What happened when everything went down. Just more of a legitimate world.
Instead we just had a stuffy family that didn't like strangers. Snooze for me.

I thought it was compelling as hell. It built to a climax so intense I could barely breathe. Are you sure you weren't just having an asthma attack?

Another complaint is that the movie doesn't even bother sticking to its own rules. (We don't go out at night, unless we do. WOLOL!)

Why couldn't they go out at night again? Because it's dark? I suppose that's a good rule of thumb in general, especially if you don't trust anyone anymore. Not something I would base the title of the movie around, or emphasize too greatly in a story, if nothing ever comes of it.
I didn't know of the marketing at the time, but I can understand how that would have affected most people. I saw it because it was getting good early word of mouth. Only knew the title and who the lead actor was. That's actually how I love to see movies, because being a film nut, it's rare I get a chance to go into a movie with a near blank slate. Maybe the title needed to be changed too? Because I was definitely waiting for it. They emphasized the night time near the beginning, so that certainly lent itself to the title... but nothing ever came at night. I'm waiting for someone to tell me it was his dreams that the title refers to. That would definitely be another "Oh....okay" reaction, if so.
The acting was solid for the most part. I felt like it would have been a good intro to a grander story, a mini-series or TV show. Maybe even a decent filler episode. That's ultimately what it reminded me of. Like a LOST or Walking Dead filler episode where little to nothing happens.
*shrugs*

I know this will run the risk of sounding a bit too pretentious, but it DID come at night. Many times. This is a movie ultimately about the fear of the unknown, and to me, that's what the title refers to: fear. And that's most directly represented by all of the nightmare sequences, which "came" at night. *shrugs*
This is a movie where I can understand both sets of opinions, but a part of me is still disappointed at the audience reaction

Right, so like I said, it was his dreams. Got it.
There doesn't seem to be anywhere in between for people. It's just one of those movies.

I would be hopping in to back up PhantomKnight more but its really hard to defend a movie when people are just fundamentally uninterested in what it's trying to do.

I've really been trying to walk a fine line here, but I do think there's some truth to what you say at the end of your review, Dracula.
