Finally decided to watch this show.
I like it. I'm still trying to figure out why it's heralded as one of the greats of all time, but I'm enjoying each episode.
The relationship between Sam and Diane has this special place in pop culture, but I'm not sure I entirely get it - I hate the idea of them as a couple. I'm still on episode 16, so they haven't gotten together yet, but I just don't see it working out, and I'm not rooting for them like I did for a Kevin and Winnie, or Ross and Rachel.
Anyway, who here loves Cheers? What did you love about it? What was the best season for you?

It's a pretty good show. Not really sure it was meant to be binge watched like we do today, it's natural habitat was probably syndication where you'd just tune in when you have time to kill and just hang out with the characters. The more you watch the more you're attached to the characters, that's really what kept people watching.
The later season are a little different from the early ones, the style tone and comedy remained consistent but there are some cast changes over time and there are definitely some key cast members that aren't in the first couple of seasons.

I'm more of a Wings guy than a Cheers guy but it's a classic nonetheless. Show hits its stride once Fraser and Woody come in. You might prefer Kristie Alley since there's more of the Ross & Rachel relationship you're looking for, but I like Diane more. I like the contrast ... the opposites attract ... aspect of it. The chemistry is better. Seasons 3 through 5 are probably the best.

I do approve of leaving out A Different World from the line-up. That show only survived by following The Cosby Show.

A Different World inflicted Sinbad upon us. For this alone, it will never be forgiven.

A Different World > The Cosby Show Words can't describe how breathtakingly bad this hot take is. I stand by it. The Cosby Show is over-rated, it's a rich old man's fantasy of a perfect family writ large. The characters on it are too squeaky clean, to me comedy requires a lot more friction. A Different World was younger and more vibrant and had a lot more to say and actually shaped my own ideas of what college was supposed to be like in a number of (admittedly perhaps inaccurate) ways.

So a white boy in Minnesota watched a show about a black college and said, "yeah, that's what I wanna experience." Sort of. Put it this way, the idea of being on a hip and socially conscious campus like that appealed to a middle school me who thought he was smarter and more intellectual than everyone around me and yearned for a place where intelligence was valued like that, the black-specific stuff just kind of seemed incidental, and when most other depictions of college just seemed to be about partying and binge drinking that one stood out.
