What if the descriptions were: Arrival - Denis Villeneuve science fiction movie with Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forrest Whitiker Barry - Movie about Obama's college years Jackie - Jackie Kennedy biopic starring Natalie Portman (that's pretty accurate) La La Land - Screen musical/romance with Ryan Gostling and Emma Stone Moonlight - Movie about gay black kids in 80s Florida based on a well respected play Nocturnal Animals - Amy Adams/Jake Gyllenhaal movie from director Tom Ford about a woman whose ex-husband writes a novel she views as a veiled threat. So what's winning Best Picture? Barry, Birth of a Nation or Moonlight? I'm still rooting for Southside with You. Early frontrunner is La La Land. Southside With You is not winning or getting nominated. It's a mediocre movie, the critics don't care, the box office isn't there, forget about it. Moonlight will be a critics darling and could get nominated, but it could just as easily be "snubbed" and inspire a bunch of angry think pieces and hashtags (#OscarSoStraight), Birth of a Nation is a pretty big wild card at this point given all the controversy and I'm also hearing that it really wasn't that great in the first place and that critics at Sundance over-reacted to it because #OscarSoWhite was going on while it premiered, don't know about that Barry thing. Other contenders are Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, Fenses, Passengers, Manchester by the Sea, and Lion, and maybe Loving. |

Moonlight looks incredible to me. Love the moody lighting and editing, looks fantastic. Oh course I'll be seeing The Arrival as well because I'm dying for Blade Runner 2. La La Land isn't generally my type of movie, but Whiplash was excellent and this film looks to be far more ambitious. It's been a weak year for film overall, so hopefully we're starting to get into some good stuff.

People love to complain about awards shows being boring, but really the only thing boring about them is acceptance speeches. They've tried and tried to minimize them, but maybe its time to just cut them out completely.
