They gave him an Oscar for Traffic and that was a lesser role and movie. Traffic was probably the better movie, but I see what you're saying. Hey, I'm the one who LIKED Sicario. You must not be a Traffic fan then. Let's just agree Benicio Del Toro is better in Sicario. I agree with that, he was fantastic in it. Heresy. Sicario is essentially the dumb action movie version of Traffic, it just doesn't feel like that because Denis Villeneuve dresses things up with some strong direction. Also, while Del Toro is cool and commanding in Sicario, his work in Traffic is more introspective and subtle. That makes me laugh because Traffic is all window dressing. Take away the shakey cam, color filters and Spanish language, and all you have is cliche on top of cliche.

I love Soderbergh's stylistic choices, but the film's power comes from it's intelligent exploration of America's drug problem on personal and political levels. It's uneasy answers to the problem are a lot more engaging than Sicario's "in fighting monsters we have to become monsters".

I think you should put it in your Netflix queue.

It's a great movie that really vividly creates the personal hell of addiction, but that doesn't denounce Traffic. It does cause Traffic is so basic. You're really gonna tell me it's a "powerful" movie. It's like comparing, let's say, Selma to Malcolm X.

You're really gonna tell me it's a "powerful" movie. Damn right I am. What it says about the drug problem in America is very poignant. Beyond that, I find all of the characters and their own stories pretty gripping and substantial on an emotional level. No, it isn't as viscerally powerful as Requiem for a Dream, but it's still intellectually powerful.

I just didn't see anything profound or new or different. It just seemed like a bunch of familiar stories mixed together with shakey cam and color filters. You can argue that Sicario isn't original either, and is a dumb action movie, but at least the window dressing is better.

I think I'm the only one here who loved Sicario -- right now, I'd put it in my Top Three of the year -- so I'm happy to see it at least get a Best Picture nod from the critics.

I had never even heard of the big short until the pre-movie show before Spectre. I am very interested.

The Big Short kind of looks like Wolf of Wall Street lite, but I do plan to give it a chance eventually. Not a huge priority though given everything else that's opening Christmas.

Literally the exact reason I haven't given in to the hype completely. Great cast though. But yeah, The Revenant, Joy, and The Hateful Eight are all higher on my "to see" list.

Doomsday Dracula PG Cooper SnoBorderZeroWell... This is something you don't see everyday. All those critics who were super impatient, and just couldn't wait for Star Wars, have regretted their decision. And so... the Critics Choice Awards... have added Star Wars as the 11th nominee for Best Picture of the year. Apparently, this has happened before. In 2000, Cast Away was screened super late for critics and they added it at the last minute as a Best Picture nominee.
