How did Boyhood do so bad? Even Whiplash won more awards. That's weird.

How did Boyhood do so bad? Even Whiplash won more awards. That's weird. It's just not a technical showcase, it underplays most of its craft elements and makes everything look easy, that isn't the recipe for awards. Also, I suspect it didn't necessarily play as well on screener discs, it's kind of a movie you need to really watch in one sitting and soak everything up.

I'm not trying to discredit Redmayne -- he was the best thing about The Theory of Everything -- but seriously, Michael Keaton WAS the best Lead Male Actor of 2014. Aside from the fact that now we're just going to keep on getting middling, Oscar bait biopics per usual, it's just a little bit of an insult that once again they award the guy imitating another guy rather than someone who molded his own character. Like I've said before and am now convinced of even further, they should separate the acting awards between biopic and fictional characters.

What a weird Oscars. I really thought best director would be for Birdman and picture for Boyhood.
Also Theory for everything for best actor? Keaton got jipped.
Big Hero 6 Whooo hoo!!

Since American Sniper is the only blockbuster to be nominated for Best Picture, the biggest discussion on social media is Lady Gaga performing The Sound of Music. Seriously. Instead of The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything, they should have nominated Gone Girl and Interstellar for Best Picture. Those two movies, combined with Sniper, would have given audiences something to invest in. Look at the Grammy's. The biggest discussion there was Beck beating Beyonce. But at the Oscars, the biggest discussion has nothing to do with the movies that were nominated. The Oscars are becoming less and less relevant every year.

Just realized that all four of the acting winners were playing professors this year, weird.

Yeah I think the Academy could have split its votes on favorites and made a few dark horses come up winners

I thought Birdman was good, just not Best Picture good. Of all the movies nominated, it's probably the best option. If they had actually nominated Gone Girl, Interstellar and Nightcrawler, we would be having an entirely different conversation today.

Yeah. We all knew it was gonna happen. But I still crossed my fingers for Michael Keaton. Ahhh poor MK. Birdman was a good win but Keaton was snubbed big time for a guy in yet another biopic. I'm not trying to discredit Redmayne -- he was the best thing about The Theory of Everything -- but seriously, Michael Keaton WAS the best Lead Male Actor of 2014. Like I've said before and am now convinced of even further, they should separate the acting awards between biopic and fictional characters. My reaction is basically the same. Redmayne was very good, but it's also exactly what you expect from a Stephen Hawking biopic. If the film had been made ten years from now with a different actor in the lead you'd likely get the exact same performance. Keaton's turn in Birdman is one of a kind. Because young people like Lady Gaga and young people are loud on social media.

I would have preferred Boyhood to win.
And honestly if they had nominated any of those three other films you mentioned, I would have preferred those to win over Birdman too. Birdman cracked my top 10 of 2014 (in the 10th spot) largely on the technical aspects (cinematography, direction, editing, etc.), not the story or writing or anything like that.

Other Thoughts
-Second year in a row my favourite film of the year has also won Best Picture, so that's pretty cool.
-Neil Patrick Harris was awful for the most part. The opening song and the Birdman/Whiplash gag was solid, everything else was really weak. All that build up for the "predictions" joke was more or less a waste. Probably not his fault so much as it is the writing.
-The Sound of Music tribute was a stupid waste of time. I don't care what the teenagers on twitter say, it was completely irrelevant to what was going on.
-Lots of interesting speeches. Patricia Arquette, Graham Moore, Common and John Legend, and Alejandro González Iñárritu all had some interesting things to say.
-That "Glory" performance was excellent.

Birdman was made for people who make movies. It's loaded with inside humor. That's why it did so well at the Oscars. But if actual cutting edge movies had been nominated, there's no way to justify Birdman winning Best Picture.

Disagree. Gravity's a fun ride but it didn't hit me nearly as hard as 12 Years a Slave did.

I think NPH did fine. He wasn't controversial, had a couple of okay jokes and was more or less forgettable which is probably the best they can hope for. Keep in mind that 'host of the Oscars' is the most thankless job in America. If you're boring, you stink. If you try to be edgy, you're offensive. If you're an older comic then the Academy is 'out of touch.' There's really no way people can win in the Oscar hosting game.

I agree with Neverending, Gravity is superior. I'm with Coop. Gravity is great mainly for its style, but 12 Years a Slave has a lot more meat on its bones.
I'm also with him on Birdman deservedly winning Best Picture. If you had asked me a few weeks ago, I would've said Boyhood, but in the time since re-watching that film, I still love it, but not quite in a "#1 film of the year" kind of way. Birdman, however, has just gone up and up in my mind upon reflection.

Everyone loved Billy Crystal back in the 1990's. And before then, Bob Hope and Johnny Carson were popular hosts as well. I think it's commonly accepted that Chris Rock is the best Oscar host in the Internet era. But he pissed off people and was never asked back. You can't treat the Oscars like an MTV award. That was his mistake.

I have to say I was impressed with Lady Gaga's voice in that medley of SoM songs - not to mention that had to be pretty nerve wracking to know Julie Andrews herself is right back stage

Can't complain about the overall selections (other than of course Keaton getting snubbed BIG TIME) but I'm still reflecting on the poor nominations over all. No "The Lego Movie" for Best Animated was a fail, no "Gone Girl" or "Nightcrawler" for Best Picture was a huge fail and as Neverending pointed out a big miss to corral some more intrigue from a viewer standpoint ("Gone Girl" was a big hit and "Nightcrawler" continues to gain ground from great word of mouth) and "Selma" should've garnered more nods as well. But I can't say I was upset over the picks other than Best Actor, and if anything it proved that I really need to see "Whiplash" when Netflix gets it.
