Also Gillian Flynn being overlooked for Gone Girl. I do agree though, the accusations of racism/sexism seem a bit exaggerated. Gone Girl in general had to contend with the book's semi-disreputable status as a "beach read." The fact that the screenplay was written by the author of that semi-disreputable "trash" probably didn't help. Exactly. There seems to be a lot of other factors beyond, "because it was written by a woman".

The "whites only" Oscars just got badmouthed at the Critics Choice Awards.

Honestly, I don't know that all this peer pressure is helping. I think a lot of Academy members felt bullied into voting for 12 Years a Slave last year and kind of came to resent it and might have taken out their frustration on Selma this year.

Never mind Oscar, here’s the 2015 FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards Nominees Ballot!
Last year was the kind where the Fango team had trouble coming up with five wide-release films we could agree were worthy of nomination—and equal difficulty narrowing down five limited/direct-to-video titles from a slew of worthy contenders.
BEST WIDE-RELEASE FILM AS ABOVE, SO BELOW, directed by John Erick Dowdle DRACULA UNTOLD, directed by Gary Shore GODZILLA, directed by Gareth Edwards OCULUS, directed by Mike Flanagan THE QUIET ONES, directed by John Pogue

Two thoughts.
1) Looking over the list of nominees again I gotta say that I hope Edward Norton pulls a win for Birdman. Unfortunately he looks to be getting eclipsed by an equally-deserving Keaton however Norton was fantastic.
2) I've never liked Julianne Moore. No reason really, I just never really liked her. Just me?

I'd honestly be okay with any of the nominees pulling a victory, except for Robert Duvall mostly because The Judge looks like sentimental nonsense. I know there are others, but I don't get the hate. She's awesome.

Simmons is my favorite in the category but this is one case where I can kind of jive with the politics of awards giving. The dude's been working so hard for so long and this is a very rare chance for him to finally get an Oscar. Norton will have plenty of other chances down the line.

Meryl Streep being nominated is just a farce at this point. Also, I was surprised at the love Grand Budapest got.

Saw Selma today. Great movie. I don't know if I would have nominated it for Best Director, but I'd certainly place it above the fucking Imitation Game.

I don't understand how you would watch The Imitation Game but not The Theory of Everything. It's literally the same thing.

I'm more or less in agreement, except I'd put American Sniper lower and I haven't seen The Theory of Everything yet, though that'll be fixed by tomorrow night.

There's nothing more Oscar-bait than a Harvey Weinstein movie, especially one that takes place during World War II. I think you guys and Dracula only watched Imitation Game first because you assumed it would be the frontrunner at the Oscars.
