I have to wonder, will Top Gun II make more or less sense than the original. The last time I tried watching Top Gun, I laughed most of the way through. Last time, we had the Cold War going on, as well as lots of sabre rattling coming from Libya. These days, there's nothing. Nobody thinks of fighter aircraft anymore when the subject of war comes up. It's all about drones and stealth bombers these days, and there's nothing exciting about that.

I don't get how it's supposed to be more honorable for a human piloting a stealth aircraft to bomb the hell out of a ground target than having a human remotely piloting a drone to do the same thing, but whatever. I seriously doubt that Russia will be the antagonist. They weren't even the baddies last time. The dialog was a bit vague about precisely where the threat was coming from, never specifying a nation. The threat this time around will probably be from an unspecified dictatorship in southeast Asia. After the Sony hack fiasco, they won't want to actually call out North Korea by name. |

There's a hefty dose of movie logic going on in this one. If Maverick's record is so bad that he "can't get a promotion" past Captain at his age, there's no way he'd still be flying fighters. The most likely outcome would be flying a desk until he resigned. Best case scenario, he's flying something boring, like a cargo plane. Since the original Top Gun didn't make the slightest bit of sense, I'm not a bit surprised.
It looks as though the plot probably involves some kind of experimental fighter that's not in the trailer. We see Maverick a few times wearing a flight suit that looks more appropriate for an astronaut than a fighter pilot. You definitely don't need one of those to fly an F-18.
