Just watched episode six. I had to put the show on pause after "Frusen Glädjé" and "Häagen-Dazs" were suggested as possible alien names to adopt, so that I could recover. I had completely forgotten about Frusen Glädjé.

Still haven't watched, but it's amusing to me that MacFarlane wanted to do a straight Star Trek show, but Fox made him put the humor in there.

Brannon Braga who worked on Generation, Voyager and Enterprise is his right hand man. Robert Duncan McNeill and James L. Conway are Star Trek vets too. Jonathan Frakes! He has surrounded himself with the right people.

With the exception of the sex change episode, this show is far from Star Trek (the original series dealt with a lot of social commentary related to current events)
Krill must be dumb as rocks.

Episode 7 Decent social commentary
But...
Black Mirror and Star Trek TNG did it
The episode with. Bryce Dallas Howard and the episode where Wesley catches a ball and steps on the grass.

The notion of an entire society basing it's structure on a pure thumbs up or thumbs down rating is interesting, but I find it impossible to believe that such a civilization could be as structurally sound as the one we're shown. People vote for what they want, not what they need. In a world where everything gets a vote, there would be no way to sustain it. While everyone on Earth hates lying politicians, most voters demand that they be told what they want to hear, knowing full well, deep down, that promises of drastically lower taxes alongside improved infrastructure, increased social benefits and higher military spending is absurd. With no politicians to blame for the crashing economy, the situation would continue to spiral out of control until society collapsed and a new structure replaced it.
