I like most sci-fi comedies, so I'll be checking it out.

Is anyone else watching this series? It's surprisingly good. I figured it was going to be a comedy loosely based on Star Trek. The reality is that it's a Star Trek series with a healthy does of humor thrown in. It's classic Trek that isn't taking itself too seriously in much the same way that Ant-Man is a superhero movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. The first episode is available for free on iTunes.
Between The Orville and Discovery, I suspect I'll be watching The Orville. CBS has placed a critic embargo on Discovery that won't be lifted until after the season premiere!

Apparently it's getting a lot of backlash from critics, but very high viewership overall.
I think it's fine so far. It's basically Seth MacFarlane's Star Trek, with some occasional silly moments and dialogue. The makeup effects are pretty good, while the CGI needs some work. I plan to continue watching.

I suspect much of the negativity from critics stems from Seth's involvement. Much of McFarlane's work is crap, and they're not giving the show a fair shake.

This show looks worse than that time when Lindsay Lohan got her labia stuck in a bear trap.
Am I doing it right?

Haven't watched it. Lost interest in it when I saw Adrianne Palicki was in it. She's like slow poison to any TV show she touches.

Jibbs Doomsday PG Cooper WyldstaarEpisode 3 is the best hour of television I've watched since the Marcia episode of the OJ Simpson show. Dracula will disagree but that's only cause he's a Babylon 5 fanboy.

Kind of weak so far.
The funniest thing was the dog licking his balls, but they had to ruin the joke by pointing it out.

And that joke (and pointing it out) sums up their style pretty well.

There's humor, Norm MacDonald in particular has a funny scene, but it's mostly a serious TNG style episode. I say give episode 3 a chance before calling off this show. If it becomes less Galaxy Quest and more TNG it's gonna fill a GIANT hole that Star Trek is failing to fill.

I feel the humour is really tonally inconsistent.

I have seen episode three, and I agree that it was far more TNG than the other two. What's more, it's better than TNG because the human characters react like humans. I also like that there is no Chief Engineer hanging around to fix any problem by rerouting plasma from the warp core through the main deflector array to generate an inverse tachyon pulse that will blah blah blah blah blah. The universe if full of real problems, most of which don't have a solution that will make everyone happy. My only real issue with the series is one of the same problems that all of Star Trek has always had- the writers don't know/care how real navies work.

Oh yay, colorectal examination jokes in episode 2. I thought to myself, "what's next? Vomit jokes?"... And there it was.
...um, yeah.

Just finished watching episode four. The happy ending with zero apparent consequences was completely unreasonable. The Orville left before they had to watch the rioting in the streets.

I was more perplexed by all the men swooning over her. Charlize Theron is not unattractive, but she's barely above average anymore. Especially with a more attractive security chief and first officer already aboard.
