Easily the worst theatrical film of the year, maybe the past 5 years.
The entire movie builds up the idea of people gradually giving up their individual privacy via improved technology in return for the promise of a better, safer, and more social society.
The main character, Mae (played horrifically by "actress" Emma Watson), encounters a mysterious stranger/co-worker, Ty, who warns her about the very vague implications and consequences of loss of privacy. The movie gets entirely creepy, and Mae seems to visibly react to some rather uncomfortable invasions of privacy, but her character never vocalizes these feelings and, instead, goes along with the creepy ideas, to the point of championing them.
Then, after seeing one final example of how a seemingly useful trade of privacy for safety turns horribly wrong, Mae and Ty's solution is to double down and further extend the use of technology at the expense of people's individual privacy, attacking the two heads of The Circle who are never really guilty of anything other than technological enterprise, and ultimately shared exactly the same goal as Mae. Meanwhile, Karen Gillan slowly transforms into Gollum without much exposition being offered up as to why until, suddenly, all is well and she casually reveals what was going on with her character.
It's nonsensical to the point of being insulting.
1/10 - Total garbage and devoid of a single shred of defensible filmmaking, storytelling, acting, or direction.

It's not THAT bad. It offers some good insights and ideas, but yes, it has nonsensical conclusions.

Despite what daniel would have you believe, it's NOT the worst theatrical release in years, but...it's still not good. And that's really unfortunate, cause I really loved the book -- might just be the best book I've read in a while, actually -- but this movie felt like more of an adaptation of the Cliff Notes version of the novel rather than the novel itself. The movie follows the same sequence of events, except for the Third Act, but lacks any of the depth the novel had and just coasts from plot point to plot point without allowing you to sink your teeth into any of it. Clearly, James Ponsoldt didn't know how to handle the material. The book is really the same story, but so much more smartly-written; it's creepy without being creepy. The mvie is essentially a pretty big waste of talent and potential. Do yourself a favor and just read the book.

Name the wide theatrical release in 2017 worse than the Circle. I'm genuinely curious.

Name the wide theatrical release in 2017 worse than the Circle. I'm genuinely curious. I ranked Life, Ghost in the Shell and Power Rangers below The Circle. Life is just an Alien rip-off, although in retrospect, it's slightly more interesting than Alien Covenant. I fell asleep during Ghost in the Shell. Visually stunning. Decent plot. But Scarlett Johansson is a really boring actress sometimes. Power Rangers is just garbage.

I can get onboard with those. I would put Power Rangers and Ghost in the Shell in the bottom 3 of the year so far.

Name the wide theatrical release in 2017 worse than the Circle. I'm genuinely curious. Can't really, since I tend to try and avoid the really awful-looking ones. By default, it's at the bottom of my list so far this year, but I don't think it's 1/10-worthy at all. More like a 4 or 5. I can name some from the past five years that are worse: Identity Thief, Pan, Hail, Caesar!, Fant4stic, Aloha, Blackhat, The Interview, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Counselor, the list goes on.
