I seem to remember hearing the script for Guardians being close to, if not final draft-worthy.
Suicide Squad has a release date currently set for August 6, 2021 with a production start of September. I could see him getting the Guardians script in shape in time to start shooting it in early to mid 2022.

Suicide Squad has a release date currently set for August 6, 2021 with a production start of September. I think that September start date is to accommodate Margot Robbie who doesn’t finish Birds of Prey till April. Speaking of which... I wonder if Suicide Squad will be a blockbuster or a modest action film. That 2021 release date could be for production demands or to space it out with Birds of Prey. Point is... Gunn could wrap Suicide Squad within the next year and head straight into Guardians. |

I’m so glad James Gunn is not being put in the same category as Harvey Weinstein Michael Jackson and Kevin Spacey etc.
He made terrible jokes 10 years ago and he said he was sorry which is the most I can ask for someone like him

I was beginning to wonder if GotG was dead in the water. I'm glad to see that everyone finally came to their senses. Now all we need is for Marvel Studios to beg and plead Edgar Wright to write and direct Ant-Man 3, and all will be right in the MCU.

I speculate that Disney was discovering that Guardians 3 post-Gunn had a stigma on it. It seemed like every director it seemed was rumored to be in discussions pretty much immediately made public they had no interest in doing it or put out support for James Gunn to be re-hired. It may have started to feel like if James Gunn didn't direct it, Guardians 3 would never have been made, or at the least would have been totally botched. It was a project that Disney wanted to cash in on but nobody wanted to make.
I had a gut feeling the minute he was fired that after the fallout happened they would rehire him a year later. They're actually ahead of what I projected.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Director's Guild put the word out that everybody should turn the project down. The firing of Gunn set a terrible precedent, and it needed to be struck down. The way everything worked out, nobody looks too bad. Disney did something stupid recently. Gunn did something stupid a decade ago. Now they get to leave the past behind and bring an awesome end to the Guardians trilogy. |
