Has it been 30 years since Ishtar?
No wonder Warren Beatty read the wrong title at the Oscars. Dude's old.
Let's start... NOW

This movie has three editors. Always a good sign.

Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman play middle aged singers trying to break into show business. Better late than never.

Are you going to give up after ten minutes, like with Batman & Robin?

If you can't make it in New York, you can try North Africa.

15 minutes into this movie and there hasn't been a single joke.

Took over 20 minutes for them to get to Ishtar. Three editors and not one of them knew it should have only take 5 minutes.

Where the hell did you even find Ishtar? There are people out there who love this movie, especially struggling/failed musicians.

There are people out there who love this movie No clue why. It's not a comedy. It's barely an action movie. The plot is nonsensical. Worst of all, it's boring. Only reason this movie is infamous is because it was at the center of studio drama. The head of Columbia (now Sony) was replaced with someone who hated Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman with a passion and purposely sabotaged the movie at the box office. Take that away and it would have just been another forgotten Warren Beatty movie like Town & Country and Rules Don't Apply.

That sounds crazy, did he get fired from Columbia for hating them or something?

That sounds crazy, did he get fired from Columbia for hating them or something? Columbia, before it was owned by Sony, was owned by Coca-Cola. Ishtar went into production while still owned by Coca-Cola. When Coca-Cola sold the studio, naturally, there was a change in management and the new head of the studio had history with Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman, whom he hated, and sabotaged the movie by leaking all the on-set troubles to the media. The movie was crucified before it was even released. In this case it was warranted cause Ishtar is a piece of shit. Forget Waterworld. Forget John Carter. This is the real deal. Genuine garbage. Almost nothing redeeming about it. Only thing I can defend is the music (the score, not the purposely bad songs) and Isabelle Adjani flashing her tits.

Where the hell did you even find Ishtar? There are people out there who love this movie, especially struggling/failed musicians. It has also benefited from a wave of people deciding that Elaine May needs to be held up as a mistreated genius despite the fact that only one of her four movies rises above the level of "meh." I actually like Ishar a bit more than Neverending but it certainly isn't the masterpiece that some of May's stans seem to think it is.

Worst of all, it's boring. Because they were struggling/failed musicians who could relate to the notion of being so desperate for success that they travel abroad to obscure places to play for American expats who would applaud for anything that reminded them of home. I had a housemate once who loved this movie. He'd been in the same situation at one point in his life. He was an idiot.

Ah. I've considered marathoning her films for a while now, maybe doing a blog series, but my library has none of her stuff so those plans are squashed for the time being.

Yeah, I was thinking about turning them into a blog post but when I actually watched the movies and realized I didn't have much to say about them beyond "eh, this one's got its moments and so does this one" I gave up on it.
