This isn't a Criterion film, but all the DTV sequels definitely are. I knew I should have DVR'd Part II.

JOHN BADHAM & ALLY SHEEDY DOUBLE FEATUREWARGAMES (1983)WarGames has one of the dumbest premises for a major Hollywood film. A high school computer genius (Matthew Broderick) and his gal pal (Ally Sheedy) accidentally hack into the United States nuclear defense system and almost launch World War III. This is a movie that should have been mocked and everyone involved should have been ridiculed, but instead, it was one of the biggest hits of 1983 and received three Academy Award nominations including Best Original Screenplay. How did that happen? The answer: WarGames is very well-executed. All the actors create believable characters, which is very important when you're tackling an outrageous concept, and director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever) knows when to wink at the audience and when to play it straight. This is a film that could have been a disaster with lesser talent involved. It just comes to show that with the right approach any story can succeed. A says computer expert and Ally Sheedy fapper, @dukeleto . SHORT CIRCUIT (1986)Jibbs favorite pick-up line.Unless you're a cold-hearted bastard like Dracula , it's impossible to dislike Short Circuit. Johnny 5 is one of the funniest and sweetest robots in the history of cinema. I could watch a hundred movies starring this character. But it is this Disney-Meets-Spielberg aspect that also hurts the movie. In a story about a company that develops robots for the military, this film is shockingly inoffensive - unless you want to complain about Fisher Stevens playing Apu from The Simpsons. Short Circuit is so adorable and good-natured that a pre-schooler can watch it and enjoy it. That's not what you want from a movie that's supposed to challenge the moral implications of using robots to bomb Russia. Even E.T. has more balls than Short Circuit. Regardless, the strengths of Short Circuit are too big to ignore. Johnny 5 is great. Steve Guttenberg and Ally Sheedy are great. The music by David Shire is criminally underrated. Director John Badham's excitement for the film is in every frame. Despite it's flaws, Short Circuit is just too much fun to dismiss. B+ says Chappie fan, SnoBorderZero .

Heh, Chappie fan. I'd check out "Short Circuit", at some point...
"WarGames" is meh, it has it's moments but loses steam fast towards the end. Were you having a mini Ally Sheedy marathon?

Italian poster for THX. They promoted it as a Francis Ford Coppola movie.

I watched THX for the first time a few weeks ago. From Letterboxd:
Before Star Wars, and before American Graffiti, there was THX 1138, a weird, experimental science-fiction film from a young and hungry George Lucas. Set in a future where love his outlawed and humanity follows rigid controls, the film follows THX 1138 (Robert Duvall), who breaks the laws and finds himself on the run. Based on the premise, you can tell the film was based on a short Lucas made in film school. While not a bad idea, the whole concept of this world and future seems a little half-baked and doesn't really hold up under scrutiny.
It doesn't help that the world building and the plot are less interested in making logical sense than they are just being experimental and weird. Thankfully, the visuals and sounds Lucas and co. create are pretty cool. I really like the look of the people, the buildings, the technology, and the robotic police officers. The film is in fact able to rely on it's visuals, at least in the first half. But at a certain point, either the visuals become less inspired or the audience simply adjusts to them. At any rate, the world and style of the film start to run thin and it couldn't come at a worse time because this is also when the story starts to get really nonsensical. I'd be okay with the literal story being so scattered if I felt there was some deeper meaning to THX 1138, but there isn't. It's a standard dystopic future without nuance or depth.
THX 1138 is an interesting little movie that does show off Lucas' knack for the technical details of filmmaking. There's also some great use of sound here and in that sense you can see the genesis of Star Wars. I can't call the film good, but it is neat I suppose.

Haven't seen it before, I should check it out. Whenever I can't sleep at night, I just pop in my copy of THX-1138. I'm usually out within five minutes. It's a good film, but the pacing is too slow and the visuals are bland.

Dear Frizzo the Clown , Today, October 21, 2015, I went to Target to buy Back to the Future on Blu-Ray and they were sold out. Sold out! Meanwhile, the store was overstocked with Back to the Future on DVD. DVD! Don't ever disrespect me like this again. On a related note, I did buy that Jurassic World steel can or whatever. Yeah, you fuckers weren't sold out of that. I also saw that Aladdin Blu-Ray with the storybook. I would have bought it but I bought Aladdin at Wal-Mart last week. Last time I impulse buy something.
