We've got maybe 3 more days until the first reviews start rolling in. From what I hear it's 'the best since the first one' which isn't saying much.

I agree about the time difference thing. Today, May 25th, is the 10-year anniversary of At World's End and it would've been neat to have Dead Men Tell No Tales be set that much down the line instead of twenty or however much it appears to be.
Fun fact: in the first cut of At World's End, which clocked in at 3 hours and 20 minutes (a cut I'd still love to see), there were scenes that were eventually cut from the film that revealed there to be a loophole in the Flying Dutchman curse: that if the true love of the Captain was waiting for him at the place they said goodbye after the first ten years, said Captain would be free from the curse. And that was supposed to be the intention behind the post-credits scene of At World's End. It also helped further explain Davy Jones' resentment of Calypso/Tia Dalma. But clearly since those scenes were deleted, and considering part of the plot of this new movie, that might not be the case anymore.

That also sounds like the dumbest loophole that a pirate curse could ever have.

Clearly, Dooms isn't a romantic at heart.

I liked it. Very fun and quite a bit of laughs. While I also liked On Stranger Tides, this one actually felt like a true sequel to At World's End. On Stranger Tides now feels like a spin-off (despite continuing the storyline of the Fountain of Youth introduced at the end of At World's End and with Dead Men Tell No Tales continuing the whole bottled up Black Pearl by Blackbeard bit introduced in On Stranger Tides). As for the post-credits stinger, I read that it might indicate that, if there is a sixth movie, Davy Jones will somehow return as the main villain (according to explanations of the scene). The supposed reason for his return is that, as Henry and Carina broke the Trident of Poseidon, Will is no longer bound to The Flying Dutchman. As a result, the Dutchman has no captain, providing a return of Davy Jones. If it is true that Jones is returning, it seems impossible for him to truly ever be defeated (unless he never actually died in At World's End).

I was going to make a snarky comment but now I'm not sure that dropping Depp is such a bad idea. Who wants to be money though that it's going to be an all-female crew?

I wouldn't put it past them.
In all honesty, though...I'm actually okay with this. I did enjoy the last one, but it seemed to wrap up that whole saga nicely and not only have they done all they can with Jack, Depp seemed to be ready to be done with the franchise anyway. Get some new blood in there, I agree. There's lots they can do with this franchise.

There's lots they can do with this franchise. Is there, really? Hasn't every movie been pirates vs the British Navy vs monsters?

Nobody says it HAS to involve the supernatural -- though it most likely will -- but there's numerous ways they could incorporate supernatural/fantastical elements to the plot. Not only that, but there's a multitude of real-life pirates (Grace O' Malley, Henry Morgan, Anne Bonny, Mary Read, etc.) that they can work into the plot somehow. Hell, I already have a couple ideas that could work as a potential plot for this if they want to go with all-new characters.

Then it's a live-action remake of Treasure Planet.
