After 12 years, Brad Grey has left Paramount. Word is he got fired because Martin Scorsese's Silence was a gigantic flop. Can you imagine getting fired over a Scorsese movie? Scorsese's next movie will be made/distributed through Netflix. If this isn't the final nail in the coffin, then I don't know what is. Paramount didn't even have a terrible year. They made Arrival and Fences, two movies nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. That is in addition to Silence and Florence Foster Jenkins, two critically acclaimed movies. Problem is, these movies don't make money. Arrival did OKAY but it isn't paying the bills. The future is Netflix, Amazon, etc. Theaters are in the blockbuster business. Get used to it, folks. The days when Titanic and As Good As It Gets can co-exist are LONG gone.

They're going to go the way of Warner Bros. with big, costly, retarded movies that are meant to be massive tentpoles. The problem is for every Man of Steel you get a few In the Heart of the Oceans and Jupiter Ascendings.

Warner Brothers kind of killed it last year, they were the second most successful studio after Disney.

Sure, when they hit they hit. Unfortunately that's not always the case.

They relied merchandise to make money. So even the Jupiter Ascending's aren't a guarantee anymore. There needs to be a brand attached to the movie.

Silence flopped because there was no marketing for it and because the faith based crowd is only interested in pandering bullshit to fit their agendas, not films that actually raise questions and adult discussions about faith like Silence. It's Martin Scorsese, at this point anyone should be honored to make a film with him regardless of how it performs at the box office. Just another example of the higher ups not having a clue.
So yes, I am blaming Trump's voter base for this and I'm okay with this.

I wish I lived in a world where Silence was likely to be a good investment, but I'm not exactly shocked that it didn't make money. If anyone greenlit that expecting it to be a blockbuster they were delusional.

If anyone greenlit that expecting it to be a blockbuster they were delusional. No one expected it to be a blockbuster, but it could have made money. The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street made over $100 million domestically. Silence made $7 million.

Paramount is to blame. No marketing, mustered up only one Oscar nod in a weak movie year proving they put no time in promoting it to the Academy either. I'm not saying it was the best film of the year, but no one should be losing their job over it not performing at the box office. Maybe over their total lack of handling the film correctly but like Dracula said who thought this was gonna be a solid hit? I don't think Scorsese even felt that way, it's just a film he wanted to make.

If you gave me any studio, I'm not sure I could name 3 movies off the top of my head that they released in the past couple years, without using Google.

Welcome to episode #97 in our 'Cinema Is Dead' series, entitled: 'No, this time we mean it. It's over. Finito. Kaput.'

I'm sorry, all I can think when I see this thread is that it should be called "It's paramount that cinema is dead."

Somehow my gut tells me this is the fault of that Snake Eyes GI Joe spin-off they did.

The rest of that movie can rot. Hell, all I want is Samara Weaving. Let's keep it simple.
