Am I the only one who thinks the Sixth Sense is awful? I was the only person in 1999 who didn't like the movie, and 17 years later, I still don't like it. M. Night Shyamalan made a name for himself with twist endings, but that was the trend back then. Every thriller wanted to be the Usual Suspects and Se7en and most failed. Bruce Willis is dead. That's obvious from the very beginning. Donnie Wahlberg shoots him and for the rest of the movie the only character that acknowledges his existence is Haley Joel Osment. Knowing that makes it difficult to get invested in the story. It's a distraction. You have a kid who not only sees dead people, but a window to the past. You don't need to surround that with fluff.

I never really cared for it. He once said it wasn't until his fifth draft that he was dead...which explains why it makes no fucking sense on a re-watch.

I watched it two or three years ago for the first time in probably a decade. I still enjoyed it. Just curious, what parts didn't make sense to you guys?
I'll be the curmudgeon and say that I really have no further interest in MNS films, Split or otherwise. Maybe if there's something that really appeals to me I'd give it a go down the road but I'm kinda gun shy on him. The Happening, Jesus Christ that movie, how did it even see the inside of a theater?

The movie makes sense... in a convoluted sense. Donnie Wahlberg could see dead people. Bruce Willis didn't believe him. Donnie Wahlberg goes mad and kills Bruce Willis and then himself. Now ghost Bruce Willis helps Haley Joel Osment by encouraging him to talk to ghosts and realize they're good spirits that just need help finishing something before passing on to the light. The story didn't really need to be a mystery thriller.

Never cared for the Sixth Sense. The acting from Osment and the mother(I forgot her name) was top notch. Bruce Willis was ok I guess. Still don't get how it was nominated for Best Picture and Director. I guess that twist ending really had an effect on people. I love Unbreakable. I could watch that movie all the time. I feel the same way about Signs. I love that movie. The Happening was terrible from all points. I never saw anything else from Shyamalan. The Visit wasn't anything special. Split really blew me away. Maybe I went in with the lowest of expectations, but this didn't feel like a Shyamalan movie. James McAvoy gives a truly great performance, the best out of any Shyamalan movie to date.

Bruce Willis being dead but not being aware of it is ridiculous and contrived. If he just appeared every now and then in a spirit kind of way, I might be able to buy it. But he didn't, he was a character with specific scenes and details. He went out to dinner with his wife and had what he thought was a one-sided conversation. Instead, it's a crafted scene (because it has to be) to work in a sense where he is both being ignored and not there at all.

Unbreakable (2000) Before Christopher Nolan ruined everything, there was Unbreakable. Some of you youngsters, like PG Cooper , may not remember 2000. Hollywood was different. Superhero movies were a rarity. Doomsday and I had to settle for shit like Steel starring Shaquille O'Neal. Unbreakable seemed like an insult. M. Night Shyamalan used all the good will from Sixth Sense to make THIS shit? But 16 years later, the movie fits nicely into the Nolanized era and is actually pretty good. It can't be entirely defended since it feels more like a TV pilot than a freakin' movie, but with the sequel on the way, it's a admirable launching pad for an M. Night universe.

The Sixth Sense's real problems are revisionist reviews after his later films.
Everyone liked that movie at the time.

Still don't get how it was nominated for Best Picture and Director. Not only that, AFI put it on their 2007 edition of the 100 greatest films list.

It really is quite good. Watched the other day since the roomie hadn't seen it. She dug it but I came away more impressed. I do think Bruce's performance is truly worth pointing out. I hadn't seen it in years so it was nice to touch back and have it live up to some of the hype.

Yeah, Unbreakable is still, hands down, my favorite Shyamalan movie.

SIGNS (2002)Swing away! This is the dumbest movie about Mel Gibson’s dead wife helping him fight off an alien invasion. Yet, it somehow still works. There’s something kinda ingenious about presenting an end-of-world story through a group of people in the middle of nowhere. And also tying it into a message about faith. It makes it feel more important than it really is. That’s the key to this movie. It feels good but it’s empty calories. It’s Grade-A schlock.

I agree about Signs. It's an enjoyable movie, but none of the details stand up to scrutiny. The notion that an alien race whose bodies react negatively to water would ever seriously contemplate coming to a planet whose surface is 3/4 water, has an atmosphere full of water vapor and all of it's plant and animal life are also made up of water is laughable. As far as they're concerned, humans have acid for blood, sweat, saliva and tears. They wouldn't want anything to do with us.

The aliens are the least stupid thing about this movie.
