In additional to The Salesman, I saw Man Called Ove and Toni Erdmann, and I thought Toni Erdmann was going to win, though everything I read said it was Man Called Ove's to lose. But, then I saw one guy say The Salesman would be the upset because people wanted to stick it to Trump. However, I concede that The Salesman could have won on its own merits without the Trump stuff. Again, I really hate that politics plays so much into what wins. It's almost unfair to those in the business. Oh well, such is life. Toni Erdmann being an offbeat three hour German comedy that doesn't play well on screeners put it at a distinct disadvantage. I heard a bunch of stories about Academy voters turning it off after twenty minutes. A Man Called Ove probably did have a better chance given its sappiness, but I kind of hate that movie so I can't be too mad if politics took it down. The Salesman is my favorite of the three I saw, but it's that director's weakest film and I don't think it's a great winner either. This has not been a great year for world cinema, or at least Oscar eligible world cinema. What do you think was the last great year for world cinema? Looking back, 2012 and maybe 2013 were the last really good years, for me.

Don't know about the year overall but the Oscar category was great last year with Son of Saul, Mustang, and Embrace of the Serpent, which are all better than what we have this year. Then in 2014 we had Ida, Leviathan, Wild Tales, and Timbuktu.

only thebstkink had "Spotlight" last year. The Big Short winning the PGA threw off the predictions last year, but everyone kinda expected Spotlight to win. Moonlight came out of nowhere. The Oscars are gonna have to get rid of preferential voting. They got lucky this time cause Moonlight benefited from the OscarsSoWhite backlash. But in the future they might set themselves up for real embarrassment. Can you imagine if Hidden Figures had won? Good thing I preserved the archive in case you died comingsoon.boards.net/thread/90/academy-awards-pool
