If Denzel beats out Casey, I'm going to be dumbfounded. Unsurprised, but dumbfounded. My read on it is that history could repeat itself from 2001. That was the year Russell Crowe won almost everything for A Beautiful Mind, then tried to beat up one of the producers at the BAFTAs, which caused a backlash and made all the voters decide that they'd rather give Hollywood's highest honor to perennial class act Denzel Washington. There was also a narrative in the media that year about the fact that there were more African American acting nominees that year than ever before and that if Denzel and Halle Berry both won it would be the first time both lead acting categories were won by African Americans. This year there's a similar dynamic. Casey Affleck has been winning a lot but the sexual harassment allegations have been following him all season. Also, he's not a huge Hollywood insider and I don't know how well liked he is in L.A. outside of the Damon-Affleck clique and he doesn't have that Denzel charisma on the campaign trail. What's more if you look at the performances you see that Affleck's work is incredibly subtle and nuance... the Academy doesn't love nuance, they want fireworks and Denzel offers that. The of course there's the whole #OscarSoWhite thing they need to make up for and this may be where they do it. Character matters more in the Best Actor category than in other categories, they want the winner there to reprent the Academy well and they've snubbed people with bad images there before like Mickey Rourke and Michael Keaton. I still think it's basically 50/50, usually when it's that close I just predict whichever choice I like the least, that way if it goes the wrong way I can at least be happy that I called it.

Casey Affleck has been winning a lot but the sexual harassment allegations have been following him all season. Sexual harassment? I am completely in the dark. While what you said has me completely worried about Affleck getting his just desserts, I think it's pretty shady that so much goes into giving out an award that should be entirely objective in the context of what it is awarded for. All that outside nonsense shouldn't come into play, but I know people are just human. Meh.

Damn daniel What was the last shocking Best Picture winner? I wanna say Crash but I think everyone saw that coming. Spotlight was kind of a shocker as everyone had kind of boarded the Revenant train by then and it won Best Director. That was probably another bit of preferential ballot related craziness. The preferential ballot (which was introduced in 2009 when they expanded to 10 nominees) also likely had something to do with the 12 Years a Slave/Gravity split.

No. We all knew Spotlight was gonna win. In the time that Jibbs has been doing the pool this might be the first genuine shocker. The fact no one predicted Moonlight is evidence. There's people who put down Manchester.

Oh hey, I just realized I won the Pool this year! w00t!
I did accurately count on the Trump hate to make The Salesman a winner: "BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - The Salesman, cuz politics," but I did not count on politics seeping into the Best Picture category. That's the only explanation I have for Moonlight besting both La La Land and Manchester - objectively two superior films. It seems like #OscarsSoWhite may not be forgotten.

Damn daniel What was the last shocking Best Picture winner? I wanna say Crash but I think everyone saw that coming. Yeah, 2005 was the last widespread shocker, but I personally felt the shock of 2007, in my own world. The people in my sphere were so sure There Will Be Blood was the frontrunner, but I kept telling them No Country for Old Men was the clear leader. That is one movie I still say was mostly carried by Daniel Day Lewis' performance, and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead's soundtrack. This year, Jackie was the new TWBB - I thought it was a dull movie entirely carried by Natalie Portman's performance, which is why I wouldn't have been surprised to see her upset Viola Davis. I still say Fences had no place in the movie theatre. That whole movie was obviously written to be a stage play, and they did little to make it seem otherwise, like, say, 12 Angry Men, or Stalag 17.

In additional to The Salesman, I saw Man Called Ove and Toni Erdmann, and I thought Toni Erdmann was going to win, though everything I read said it was Man Called Ove's to lose. But, then I saw one guy say The Salesman would be the upset because people wanted to stick it to Trump. However, I concede that The Salesman could have won on its own merits without the Trump stuff. Again, I really hate that politics plays so much into what wins. It's almost unfair to those in the business. Oh well, such is life.

Toni Erdmann being an offbeat three hour German comedy that doesn't play well on screeners put it at a distinct disadvantage. I heard a bunch of stories about Academy voters turning it off after twenty minutes. A Man Called Ove probably did have a better chance given its sappiness, but I kind of hate that movie so I can't be too mad if politics took it down. The Salesman is my favorite of the three I saw, but it's that director's weakest film and I don't think it's a great winner either. This has not been a great year for world cinema, or at least Oscar eligible world cinema.
