I watched it finally. Definitely better than the happening so that's good. What I liked. - McAvoy owning this role and keeping you on your toes. - Cassie chic was cool. - the twist at the end was awesome , so pumped for the unbreakable sequel. Aren't they technically both unbreakable though?? Or did I miss something. What I didn't like - Shamalyan cameo... wow was that cringy to watch. - Cassie's backstory was interesting but it's something that will not carry over to the sequel, I don't know I have missed feelings about it - The old lady was suppose to be smart, and yet she made some stupid decisions at the end of the movie. I don't want to go into it, but she could have done a lot to help/run for help. (I guess characters will always make terrible decisions in thriller/horror movies.) anyways overall solid effort not his best work but highly recommended still. ranking I suppose 1.signs 2.6th sense 3. unbreakable 4. split 5. the village everything else is turd. I haven't seen the visit, but I guess I should a lot of my friends are saying it's good as my top 5. So I might check it out soon.

Watched this today. Good, not great. The twist is such a tack-on but still has me looking forward to the next installment.

Spoilers, I guess? Like The Visit, Split is another good little film from M. Night Shyamalan on his comeback tour, just maybe not as great as most people seem to be saying it is. I'd been doing a fairly good job of avoiding hearing the film's twist until the film's Blu Ray release, where plans of a sequel, and thus its connection to the twist, were revealed. So I ultimately went in knowing what was coming, but I feel this movie should be judged first and foremost on its merit without the benefit of the twist ending. And as such, it's good. Certainly the best thing to be said for Split is James McAvoy's performance as Kevin, a man suffering from multiple personality disorder. By now we know just how great of an actor McAvoy is, and this role gives him a chance to emphasize that. He commands the screen whenever he's on it and really evokes a sense of dread and unease at the same time. There's a real unpredictability factor to his character, which adds to his scenes and the movie as a whole. By extension, this premise also gives Shyamalan to prove just how good he is at creating tension and atmosphere, and also sustaining it. Like I said, this movie does a good job of instilling unease. But on the other hand, Split also shines a light on some of Shyamalan's oddities as a writer/director. The main thing there is that there are quite a few dialogue scenes/exchanges in this film that just feel...well, off, as if it doesn't sound like stuff people would normally say to each other, or at least, the way they would say it. The biggest example of this is Shyamalan's cameo scene, where the dialogue sounds very stilted. But about the twist: I liked it. I really liked it. Mainly because I consider Unbreakable to be M. Night Shyamalan's best film to date, so the idea of a "franchise/shared universe" with it, of sorts, gets me excited. And I think it's cool how this movie is really an origin story of a villain, much in the way that Unbreakable was the origin story of a hero. So the idea of Kevin and David Dunn going at it, with Mr. Glass in the middle, makes me extremely excited for Glass, and want to pull a double feature of Unbreakable and this movie. So, yes, I liked Split. I still may be waiting for Syamalan's TRUE comeback movie, but good/solid thrillers like this in the meantime will do just fine. ***/****
