"Oh... my... God. Becky, look at M. Night. He's like - a legitimate filmmaker again.""The real twist of Split is that M. Night Shyamalan actually made a good movie.""Donald Trump is President. M. Night is making good movies. Is this the world now?"Ever since X-Men: First Class in 2011, James McAvoy has slowly turned into my favorite actor working in Hollywood today. He's surpassed Michael Fassbender. Can we make HIM James Bond? Split, the comeback of M. Night Shyamalan (The Visit doesn't count), stars McAvoy as a criminal with multiple personality disorder. When we meet him, 4 of his 24 personalities have taken over and kidnapped 3 teenage girls. What do they plan to do with these girls? Watch the movie. It's not rape. Aside from 2 of the girls being stripped to their lingerie and 1 of them being raped by her uncle as a child, the movie isn't sexually or even violently explicit. It's a psychological thriller through most of its running time. From a purely technical standpoint, there's nothing wrong with the movie. Shyamalan is a veteran and knows what the fuck he's doing. As bad as M. Night got, he was never Kevin Smith bad. McAvoy is, of course, the main attraction and he's phenomenal. Dumping this movie in January is a MAJOR disservice. Dude delivered an Oscar worthy performance. The same shit happened last year to John Goodman when 10 Cloverfield Lane was quietly released in March. Studios need to stop fucking these great actors who hit home runs in genre films. And like 10 Cloverfield Lane, the ending will surely have people discussing this movie endlessly until the next wave of blockbusters come out. It's M. Night. You KNOW there's a twist. Luckily, it's not the twist you suspect. He actually pulled it off this time. This is coming from the guy who in 1999 saw the Sixth Sense twist coming a mile away. I was totally surprised/caught off-guard and the entire audience was shocked too. Twist aside, the ending isn't terrible but it does kinda fuck up the movie a bit. I hate to sound like PG Cooper who bitches about every ending, but this one is legitimately flawed because it turns the movie from a psychological thriller to something else entirely. Think of The Village but less eye rolling. You can't re-watch this movie and have the same experience cause you know you're watching something else. Regardless, it doesn't bother me enough to dismiss the movie. It's engaging and McAvoy is awesome. No ending can change that. So take a break from all the Oscar bait nonsense and watch Split. It's not often that a January movie is fucking good, let alone a fucking M. Night Shyamalan movie. We truly live in a topsy turvy world. A/ A- so says Doomsday

M. Night Shyamalan vs. Kevin Smith....man that's a tough one. I want to say that M. Night Shyamalan really believes in the movies he makes and thinks that they're legitimately of good quality while Kevin Smith knows that the movies he makes are shit. I know he thought Red State was a great film but movies like Tusk and Yoga Hosiers, come on.
As for MNS, if he can get back in the saddle good for him but he was in his twenties when Sixth Sense came out and the majority of his career has been spent making bad, bad movies. A good movie for him is an exception to the rule, at least as of now.

Night movie and it SEEMS like he learned from his post-Village mistakes. Split FEELS like a Sixth Sense/Signs era M. Night movie.

***SPOILERS***
As a standalone movie, this is just a great movie. As a movie within the context of Shyamalan's other works, this might be his best work yet. If you want a basic plot overview, Neverending nailed it up above. For me, I want to defend my position on this movie being at the leader of the pack in Shyamalan's filmography.
Shyamalan knew what to expect from his audience. He knows every curve ball he has thrown at us in each one of his films, and he leveraged that knowledge to make the twists and questions possible here. With The Sixth Sense, he introduced us to a world where the supernatural was possible. In Unbreakable, he introduced us to a world where there can be people with powers beyond what humans are capable of. In The Village, he introduced us to a world that, in the end, was just quite normal. In Signs, he introduced us to a world where aliens existed. With Split, he kept the audience guessing what it might be - is there something inhuman happening, or was this just a real world psychological disorder? The presence of the psychological disorder was brilliant, it's what truly made the twist work. First, the groundwork was laid - it is possible that a singular personality in someone with multiple personality disorders could have it's own, unique medical conditions that required treatment that the other personalities did not require. When we were teased with the idea of a personality of The Beast, that it could turn a human into something more - something with tougher skin and the ability to climb walls, the knowledge of Shyamalan's previous films caused you to question if we could really be headed down that path, or if this was solely a psychological journey for our antagonist. In the end, the answer unfolded, but the biggest twist was saved in the end when we were shown exactly which world it was we were watching.
The strength of Shyamalan doing what he does best was only multiplied with an incredible story, along with a backstory that unraveled into something truly heartbreaking. I'm one of the few who has never hated any of Shyamalan's films, but I recognize they were starting to get a bit stale until the underrated The Visit. While that movie was good, it wasn't impactful enough to bring people back to the defense of Shymalan. Split should have no problem doing that, however, though my trepidation is that Shyamalan has set himself up for the demand of a sequel, and failing to deliver might have him losing his audience again.
9/10 - Superb film

I haven't hated many, I just use the 1-10 grading scale differently. 5/10=average, where as I think people see 5/10 and think "bad movie." That's why I always define my rating so it doesn't confuse anyone. If you look at my scores for movies in 2016, only a handful were under 5/10.

I really enjoyed this movie. Went in not really knowing what to expect and came out very surprised. Maybe this will be released later in the year because Mcavoy gives an amazing performance, he deserves acknowledgement for this. The ending seemed to just be thrown in there. It didnt fit with the feel of the rest of the movie. Having said that, it was awesome and a hell of a surprise.

I liked the ending - it showed us how the impossible was possible by showing us what world Shyamalan was telling us a story within.

I enjoyed the movie until that ending twist, which wasn't really a twist because you kinda expect it, even though it's unrealistic. So in a way, the movie doesn't surprise you. I was surely hoping for a different kind of twist. Something like, the girl being the one with the many personalities.

I think David Dunn is going to hunt down the Beast Yup: Already been confirmed. He is working on the sequel as we speak. What's it going to be called, though? Split is fresher on everyone's minds, so it's obvious they'll need to ride off that for the marketing, but it'll be interesting to say the least.

Dug it.
8/10
Hearing the college kids around me try to explain the ending was fun. Clearly didn't understand the reference.

I didn't care for the twist. And the multiple personalities was pretty much just as bad as I was worried it would be.

Sorry man. I was enjoying it for a while, but that was sort of under the expectation that it was going to go somewhere interesting. It didn't.

I still just can't do it. It's not going on my Netflix list, I'm not using a disc for it. If someone happened to have it or wanted to watch it through their own accord, I might sit there and give it a shot.

Re watched this and I still say McAvoy deserves acknowledgement come awards season. Such a great multi performance man. The part where Kevin comes out is heartbreaking man, geez.
