My purchases of blu-rays have cut back considerably. Partially for financial reasons, partially because i'm really picky about what I buy and nothing is really on my radar right now.

That's a rare find, my friend.
I've really dialed back my purchasing habits. I sorted my Blu-ray collection on bluray.com by 'Recently added', I counted 23 this year. When I factored out movies I've bought for my girlfriend, I'm down to 12.
And when I take it a step further and factor out purchases that, in John-world, are no-brainers (in this case, Cap 2 and Thor 2, and the newest season of Mad Men), I'm down to only 9 random purchases over the entire year (one of them being the four Burton/Schumacher Batman films in one set for like $10, that's bordering on no-brainer territory). I'm pretty proud of that. I was a little out of control the past few years, so it was good to have a down year. I suspect next year will be just as low, to the point that I might even maintain a list in this thread for it just to see.

That's fine, I'm sort of at the same buying level. I've probably only bought 10 this year, maybe. At some point you reach a plateau.

I've bought quite a bit this year so far, but save for a few of the new releases, I generally try to stay in the $15 or under range. That can be more difficult now, though, since I tend to buy from Amazon a lot and this year they started charging tax with their orders, which combined with shipping and handling costs, spikes the total price up at least $5 or $6 or so. However, I was recently able to get Days of Future Past for $13.96 at Best Buy and just tonight, I got a copy of Green Zone on Blu Ray from eBay for just $1.99. So, as always, I just look for the best prices.

At some point you reach a plateau. My girlfriend helped slow my habit down. One day she asked me why I really bother buying movies anymore, "You watch them once or we watch it once, and then you go back to re-watching the Marvel James Bond movies." There might have been a few uses of the word "stupid" in there, but that's the gist of it. She's right, I trimmed down my collection pretty significantly (I sold over 100 Blu-ray's) and I honestly can't even remember 75% of what I sold. That's how bad my habit was.

I was inching toward 250. It actually wasn't too hard deciding what to trim. I cut everything I had only watched once and everything I was saving because of "historical importance" like Citizen Kane, Ben-hur, etc. just not movies I'm really going to revisit anytime soon. I kept everything Marvel, Bond, Pixar for the most part, movies by favorite actors and directors, and that was pretty much it. It was easier than I thought it would be once I got started.

Having a smaller collection has also allowed me to feel more free to not watch from it if I don't want to and instead watch Netflix or something I downloaded or whatever. It's easier for me to ignore like 120 movies, was much harder to ignore 250. I'm weird.
The funny thing now though is that because I trimmed a lot of what I had and obviously didn't sell any of what she owns, the shelf looks very hodge-podged together. Right after the Captain America movies is Cinderella. Little Mermaid is hanging out with Mad Men. That Thing You Do, one of her favorite movies, is right next to Thor.
Oh well.

Even with a smaller collection it's hard to find things if they're not alphabetized. I may have sold a bunch of movies, but I'm not a monster.

Yeah, if my collection wasn't alphabetized, it'd just drive me crazy, to the point where I'd have to go back and re-organize that way. Alphabetization brings me peace.

I slowed down significantly as well. Now I usually buy Criterions or movies I find for cheap around $5 or $7. I have enough as it is that I'll probably never watch again.

I know where every one of my movies is supposed to be in my collection. I... wait, that's not as cool as I think it is, is it?
