io9 had an interesting call-out to commenters recently for unexpected heartbreaking moments in TV series.
One of the ones that stuck with me in the comments is below. I remember it instantly and am surprisingly moved by it all these years later.
So I'd thought I'd expand on the idea beyond the whole heartbreak premise. What are your favorite unexpected emotional moments in TV series? Or failing that, your favorite very special episodes?
YouTube videos encouraged.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but this episode of Graham Norton made me happier than any other show ever has. The feel good vibes were so infectious!
If you ain't smilin', you dead bro!

PROBABLY the best "very special episode" is the one from Family Ties where Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) goes into depression when his best friend dies. He won an Emmy for that episode.

my first introduction to CPR Remember the episode of The Jeffersons where George saves the life of a KKK member? I don't remember if it was CPR or something else, but I think that tops your Punky Brewster.

No, but I have watched the All in the Family where Edith fends off her rapist by throwing a burning cake in his face.

No, but I have watched the All in the Family where Edith fends off her rapist by throwing a burning cake in his face. Even as a kid I thought to myself, "why would anyone wanna rape Edith?" But I guess that was the twist to the story. Raping Gloria would have been too obvious of a story.
