The story can move forward without the Rance family. I'd love to see a season 2 focusing on Tomas and Marcus handling the "bigger" plans that Maria hinted at.
Overall I'd say that things wrapped up pretty neat and tidy. If we don't get a second season I'll be disappointed, but none of the loose ends left were really enough to bother me.

William Peter Blatty (January 7, 1928 – January 12, 2017) was an American writer and filmmaker[1] best known for his 1971[1] novel The Exorcist and for the Academy Award-winning screenplay of its film adaptation. He also wrote and directed the sequel The Exorcist III.[1]
Born and raised in New York City, Blatty received his bachelor's degree in english from the Georgetown University in 1950, and his master's degree in english literature from the George Washington University in 1954. Some of his other notable works are the novels Elsewhere (2009), Dimiter (2010) and Crazy (2010)

I love how they usually get the right atmosphere in this show. For instance, its been a long time since any movie or show has has a scene where I really felt the tension. In the second episode where the guy was walking back from the birth at the farm, and was in the woods really got me going. I just finished the third episode and I thought the Münchhausen by Proxy was a very nice twist.
